Joe Biden’s Election Victory – Political Defeat for Boris Johnson

US President Donald Trump during his presidency strongly expressed his opposition to the EU and was friends with populist British politician and Brexit campaigner Nigel Faraz – and an ally rather than friend to Brexit supporter current British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The fact that Donald Trump was in favour of Brexit, reinforcing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s position towards the EU, wrongly gave the British public the impression that Donald Trump would recognize and meet the UK’s needs in the post-Brexit era.

In such a case, the UK would be in a difficult and extremely weak negotiating position vis-à-vis the US as it would have no alternative.

Joe Biden’s policies vs Boris Johnson’s policies

Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s recent election victory in the US Presidential election makes British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s position very politically difficult. Both US President Donald Trump during his presidency strongly expressed his opposition to the EU and was friends with the populist British political and his supporter Joe Biden and former US President Barack Obama under President Obama (2008-2016) were firm supporters of the strong EU and against Brexit.

Joe  Biden himself is of Irish descent and the Irish lobby in the Democratic party is powerful; the fact that the default on the EU-UK  Brexit deal by current British Prime Minister Boris Johnson seriously calls into question the 21-year-old peace deal in Northern Ireland automatically puts  Joe  Biden up against Boris Johnson.

This will force the British Prime Minister to either change his intransigent stance so far or continue to move against the EU while creating problems for the Irish and Northern Irish, so any US-UK cooperation under President Joe  Biden will put the UK in a difficult position.

International developments show that either Boris Johnson will be politically isolated he will have to turn 180o in his policy to date for the UK to have a more leading role in international politics.

Boris Johnson’s Fight for Political Survival

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s aggressive economic populism is creating many intra-party reactions within the Conservative party because it “rips off” Baroness Margaret Thatcher’s legacy.

But this economic populism is the only way for the UK Prime Minister to survive politically and given his government’s misguided choices and manipulations to date.

In his attempt to address the economic and social consequences of the pandemic in order to maintain his popularity, the British Prime Minister has gone on to draw up nationalizations’, e.g. British Railways, while spending huge amounts of public money to support the income of workers and freelancers along with financial support/survival of businesses.

So far it is estimated to have spent around £200bn and that is why the budget deficit in the annual government budget is close to 17% of GDP.

But at the end of the pandemic his government will have to raise taxes and make drastic cuts to public spending that will affect health and the NHS as well as the welfare, education and defence sectors.

The fact that the increase in public expenditure is without control does not mean that the desired economic result will also be achieved.

What is outlined now that we are nearing the end of 2020 is that the UK with the choices of current Prime Minister Boris Johnson is turning into a country that will for many years have fiscal and macroeconomic structural problems that will be forced to subsidize everything without any limits.

The Labour party now led by Keir Starmer, a charismatic former supreme court justice, has managed to move politically from the shameful radical left to the centre-left by seriously claiming the future British prime minister ship.

We therefore conclude that the already political choices and the minimum-than-average management of the challenges that emerged in 2020 by the Boris Johnson government have not created the momentum in the UK that will claim a new global role on the international political scene momentum  (See analysis entitled “The UK’s Global Role In The Post-Brexit Era Is Increasingly Being Removed”).

This situation is made more difficult by Donald Trump’s election victory, as Boris Johnson lacks his strongest political supporter by isolating him from the EU.
