EU Med Group or Euro Med 7 or Med7

EU Med Group or Euro Med 7 or Med 7 is an alliance of seven Southern European Union member countries France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Malta, Greece, and Cyprus. They are all part of the Mediterranean region and have Greece-Roman heritage. All seven countries are also part of the Eurozone, and all except Cyprus are part of the Schengen Area.

French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated support for Greece and Cyprus, proclaiming “Mediterranean Peace” and describing the limits of the tolerance of the seven EU and eurozone member countries towards Turkey. While openly warning Turkey of a list of sanctions at the EU Summit and at the European Council meeting on 24-25 September 2020.

The President of France also openly referred to the content of paragraph 6 of the Joint Declaration of the countries of the European South, in which Turkey is called upon to adapt fully to international law and in particular international law of the sea, advising all disputing parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiations.

What military assistance agreement between France-Greece-Cyprus means

Military assistance between France-Greece-Cyprus means that if one of these euro area/EU member countries is attacked by a military attack then the other members participating in this military  assistance are obliged to take military action against the attacker towards this member, a situation similar to the naval Battle in Navarino on 8-20 October (1827) on the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsula in the Ionian Sea.

Then France united through the Treaty of London (1827) the other two European powers England and Russia against the Ottoman Empire defending the independence of Greece and forcing the then Ottoman Empire to recognize the independence of Greece.

In the same way history repeats itself to a point and the then Treaty of London (1827) which France had pioneered wanting to bring out its geopolitical star again and having emerged defeated by the Napoleonic Wars, through the Med 7 summit finds the opportunity to star and lead, where France and after the UK’s exit from the EU wants to take the lead again by bypassing Germany’s economic and political hegemony within the EU.

Why France has taken this initiative

The French political and economic elite rightly sees that it is time for France to shine its geopolitical and leading star again and gain the status of superpower. The fact that the US is withdrawing its influence in the Middle East region and in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea is a geopolitical vacuum.

This geopolitical gap is mainly being covered by Russia, Iran, and Turkey in terms of the Middle East region and Russia and Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea region. This gap must be rightly filled by France.

France is the only country in the world after the US, Russia, UK, and China that its defence industry can produce entirely its own weapons systems for every branch of its Armed Forces. Rightfully because it belongs to the EU Eurozone like the other Med 7 member-countries. France leads militarily in the EU and NATO when it comes to Europe.

Historically the geopolitical natural “living space” of France includes (concentric circles starting from France) all countries (East of France) Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland (West of France) the Iberian peninsula (Portugal, Spain) and (South West of France) Italy. It does not include the Balkans.

Through the agreement of military assistance between France-Greece-Cyprus, France manages to implement the restriction of Islamic Turkey and at the same time drastically expands its vital geopolitical space in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East (Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey-Syria- Iraqi Kurdistan).

NATO ‘brain dead’

The US and Germany are reacting strongly to all these initiatives in France, but at the moment the US and because of its prolonged introversion have to deal with serious internal unrest and when American society is marching polarised and divided towards the November 2020 American elections.

At the same time, the US military at the behest of US President Donald Trump is gradually withdrawing from the Middle East region (a trend that will continue regardless of who will be in the White House after the US elections in November 2020) leaving the field open to other regional powers such as Turkey, Russia (because of Syria) and Iran.

Germany, not having the military might of France, is very difficult to take initiatives that will lead to success since both the civil war in Syria and Libya respectively failed to stop the war, while in the crisis between Greece-Cyprus (EU member countries such as Germany) with Turkey, Germany has kept an equal distance (unheard of, let us imagine that the state of Virginia keeps equal distances in a conflict between the State of Florida and Mexico).

France through the Med 7 alliance and bilateral mutual defence assistance agreements manages to create a new European defence force that will protect French and European interests by cancelling the role of NATO, which French President Emmanuel Macron described as “brain dead”.

The other countries of France’s geopolitical vital area (Med  7) and other member countries of the central and eastern Eurozone/EU that are concerned about the migration problem (e.g. Austria) and fear their proximity to Russia (e.g. Poland) are expected to enter this alliance.

All these EU member countries but also countries outside the EU such as Egypt, the United Arabic Emirates and Saudi Arabia have a common denominator that unites them. None of these countries wants to see Turkey’s influence on Islamic populations living at home through Turkish immigrants increase.

The flow of future events in the EU and its periphery will change if these initiatives and alliances of France last over time.
