Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, just two days after the successful BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, is not just an economic policy measure, but a clear political message. This move is interpreted by many as a reaction to Brazil’s increased international presence and the diversification of its diplomatic course.
1. Political punishment or pressure strategy?
The imposition of the tariffs was accompanied by Trump’s accusations against Brazil of political persecution of former President Bolsonaro, his close ideological ally. Although the Bolsonaro affair began several months ago, the delay in American reactions reinforces the impression that this is a pretext, with the ultimate goal of limiting Brazil as an independent actor on the international stage.
The fact that the tariff announcement came immediately after the BRICS summit also highlights US strategic anxiety over the growing influence of this bloc, in which Brazil now plays a leading role.
2. Brazil’s response: Coolness and strategic diversification
President da Silva immediately rejected the American justification, recalling that US-Brazilian economic relations are already favorable to Washington, while the trade balance is in surplus for the United States. Moreover, Brazil responded not only rhetorically but also with actions: it reiterated its will not to abandon the strategy of a multidimensional foreign policy, strengthening ties with Russia, China and ASEAN.
3. Economic Impact: Pressure but Not Submission
Although the tariffs affect up to 36% of Brazilian exports to the US, they do not affect the entire economic relationship. High-tech and strategically important products, such as aircraft and precious metals, are currently exempt, leaving a window for negotiation open.
At the same time, Brazil’s dependence on Russian fertilizers (30% of total imports) and the strengthened trade relationship with China (over $150 billion in 2024) act as a shield against US pressure. Latin America is no longer the US “backyard”, but a geopolitical arena for assertion and strategic independence.
4. Lula’s political game: National pride and electoral support
Lula’s stance towards the US also seems to be paying off on a domestic political level. Despite the contradictions in the positions between himself and his ministers, the strategy seems to be deliberate: the Presidential Palace sends a message of independence and national dignity, while at the same time the technocrats keep the door of dialogue with Washington open.
Lula’s increase in popularity after the American attack confirms that the rhetoric in favor of sovereignty is finding resonance. With Bolsonaro out of the political game, the tariffs gave Lula the opportunity to present himself as a defender of the homeland against foreign intrigue.
5. Towards a new polycentric balance
The US-Brazil confrontation is not an isolated incident, but a symptom of a deeper realignment of global power. The countries of the South, spearheaded by the BRICS, are demanding more voice, more independence and more alternatives.
Trump’s aggressive stance may temporarily strengthen his influence within the US, but it also reinforces the narrative of independent powers in the global South. Brazil, as the leading voice of the bloc, seems ready to continue its path without succumbing to pressure.
The next act of the drama may be written in Kuala Lumpur, where ASEAN may open new doors for Brazil in Asia, away from traditional American influence.
