During the “Unmanned Systems X” exhibition, which is taking place in Bonn, Germany, Airbus presented an armed UAV for intercepting UAVs and roving munitions. The system is called LOAD (Low-cost Air Defense) and is based on the company’s Do-DT25 UAV. The LOAD, which is launched using a catapult, can carry up to three guided missiles. The LOAD has a range of 100 kilometers and is controlled by a ground station. The system is integrated into the local surveillance network and is based on the transmission of data and information from local radars. With this data and information, the LOAD autonomously searches, identifies and neutralizes enemy UAV targets and roving munitions.
After completing its mission, the LOAD returns to its base and lands using a parachute. It can operate alone or in a swarm. According to Airbus, LOAD is a cost-effective solution that assists anti-aircraft systems and helps save missiles, such as Patriots. In addition, the use of LOAD helps to deal with saturation attacks, while a number of LOADs can take over anti-aircraft coverage of an area when anti-aircraft systems are not available. The first flight of LOAD, with a load of two missiles, is scheduled for late 2025, while the system will be available for sale and production in 2027.
