It is a black hole that produces an unprecedented level of luminosity. It is also known that black holes, and especially the larger ones, literally devour stars and other cosmic structures, and the matter that they have not digested in the process of…digestion is ejected with tremendous force and speed into Space. This process produces impressive phenomena that reveal the existence and activity of black holes allowing scientists to learn various facts about them.
In a publication (Scary Barbie: An Extremely Energetic, Long-Duration Tidal Disruption Event Candidate Without a Detected Host Galaxy at z = 0.995) in the online pre-publication archive arXiv a research team presents the discovery of the most brilliant meal of a black hole detected to date in the Universe. The source of the phenomenon is a supermassive black hole 7.7 billion light-years from Earth, with researchers reporting that the glow produced by the ejection of material from inside the black hole into space is similar to that of a trillion of stars like the Sun!
The researchers named the black hole “Scary Barbie” after the well-known female doll. “It’s absurd. We can take a conventional supernova explosion and multiply its brightness by a thousand times and the result will still be far from the brightness of the particular object. And supernova explosions are among the brightest objects in the sky,” says Danny Milisavljevic, professor of physics and astronomy at Purdue University in the US, a member of the research team. As is understandable, the study of the phenomenon reveals new evidence about the nature and mechanisms of black holes.
