The Geopolitical implications of the Crisis in Taiwan are of Global magnitude

The crisis in Taiwan concerns us all. As strange as it may seem to us. Although the island is far away, what happens there can have a strong impact on the lives of all the people on the planet. The effects of what is done there can be extremely important for our political freedoms, for the strategic data we will face in the future and for the economic situation of every country on the planet. In short, what happens in Taiwan will likely have repercussions around the world.

On the first level, China’s provocative moves outside Taiwan’s territorial waters constitute an open challenge to democracy. A small country in which free expression is respected, the right of the people to decide their future and in which the economy operates outside the tutelage of the state threatens the huge Leviathan that dominates Asia, namely China, by challenging the absolute hegemony of. Beijing has repeatedly claimed that its traditional Asian social and cultural values cannot accept the functioning of democracy. Beijing’s view is that freedom threatens the cohesion of society and will eventually lead to chaos and economic ruin.

His example can even inspire many countries of the world for the right way of state formation and economic development. Together with Russia, they argue that any Western-style liberal democracy experiments lead to dead ends and tragedies.

But the example of Taiwan and the economic and social miracle it has achieved spoils this narrative. Together with South Korea they are a living example of how Asian values can successfully go hand in hand with democracy and individual freedoms. Thus giving hope and perspective to many societies around the world that there is a path to prosperity, development and happiness away from the one-way path of authoritarianism and absolutism.

But for this experiment to survive and for the hope of freedom to remain alive, the protection of Taiwan and the survival of the alliance shield constituted, under the auspices of the USA, ASEAN for Asia, the special relationship of Japan, Australia and the United Kingdom are necessary Vassiliou and NATO. Faced with the obvious geostrategic threat of the close relationship between Russia and China, the West must show a strong front of resistance. And securing Taiwan’s independence and saving democracy there is an essential part of the necessary chain of armor of the free democratic way of life.

But also in the question of everyday economic life, to ensure our prosperity, a free Taiwan is necessary. The country’s economic development and the dominant role it plays in the field of new technologies make unhindered access to the products it produces essential for many current economic and technological activities.

Taiwan today produces 60% of the world’s volume of semiconductors (semiconductors) which are necessary, among other things, for the operation of electronic devices and computers and in fact more than 90% of the most advanced of them. All the tools necessary for modern life, from telephones to cars to modern factories, come from Taiwan. An invasion there would destroy most of them. If it were to fall into China’s hands, everyone understands what the consequences would be for the global economy and who would be able to control it.
