Ukraine: Zelensky and Macron underlined the need for a demilitarized zone around Zaporizhia

The French and the Ukrainian president believe that the root of the problem lies in the illegal possession of the nuclear power plant by Russia. The need to create a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was underlined by French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky during a telephone conversation they had today.

The French president, who contacted the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Raphael Grossi, by telephone on this issue yesterday, stressed that the Agency should intensify its efforts to achieve the withdrawal of all military forces from the nuclear plant.

As stated in a related statement from the Champs-Elysées, the French and the Ukrainian president believe that the root of the problem lies in the illegal possession of the nuclear power plant by Russia. The two presidents also discussed the issue of Ukraine’s needs ahead of winter.

This issue will be the subject of discussion at the International Conference on Aid to Ukraine which will take place on December 13 in Paris. Macron and Zelensky agreed that the issue of energy supply to Ukraine should be the absolute priority of the Conference.
