The Extensions of the “Civil War” in Ethiopia

When Ethiopian President Abi Ahmad made peace with the neighbouring state of Eritrea in 2018, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Today more than a month and with the help and tolerance of the neighbouring country of Eritrea opened a new internal front this time within his own country wanting to close open accounts with his political opponents.

As of 3 November 2020, the province of Tigray, located on Ethiopia’s northern border with Eritrea, has been in a fierce and deadly civil war between Addis Ababa forces and the TPLF party army.

The fighting is now taking place on the streets of the surrounding areas of Macelle, the capital of Tigray province with a population of 500000 inhabitants with a high level of urban and industrial infrastructure, respectively.

Tigray province has been blocked since the first day of clashes both in terms of communication and in terms of transport and transport network with the rest of the country.

TPLF has penetrated quite a bit inland and launched rockets against the two airports in Amhara, Ethiopia’s second-largest city. At the same time, both the normal and the rural population are armed and fighting the TPLF army. near the Ethiopian and Eritrean borders.

Given these events, there are fears of ethnic cleansing in this province but also in the rest of the country especially those belonging to the ethnic group of Tigray province and working in the public sector of the State of Ethiopia.

The head of the TPLF is the Ethiopian government’s telecommunications minister until forty-five days ago and responsible for promoting Chinese interests in the country, Mr. Debrecen Gebremikel.

Abi Ahmad, both an unelected Prime Minister and Nobel Laureate, is the politician attempting to implement a major privatisation programme with clear support from the West.

The TPLF guerrilla can be repelled from cities and the urban fabric but will continue to exist for years in the rural and mountainous areas around the city of Macelle causing chaos and economic bleeding in Ethiopia’s economy and outside the massacres and ethnic cleansings that are likely to take place.

After years of civil war, if no solution is found, the secession of Tigray province as an independent state will open up the Aeolian ascetic by creating separatist tendencies and trends of independence in the other provinces (ten in total) of Ethiopia, each representing a different ethnic group.

China’s support for the TPLF will continue and as China wants to increase its influence on the Ethiopian government by acquiring an increasing share of the public works that will be done in the country and in particular telecommunications projects but also in the event of the independence of Tigray Province the new state will depend economically/commercially on Eritrea where China has lent the government of that state huge sums to rebuild its infrastructure.

The future is ominous for the country and the people of Ethiopia unless the logic and interest of the whole prevails in relation to the personal political interests of opponents.
