Japanese Navy Acquires Another Kawasaki P-1 Naval Surveillance Aircraft

On November 11, 2020, the Japanese Naval Self-Defense Forces unveiled its new acquisition, the Kawasaki P-1 naval patrol and anti-submarine warplane. The Japanese Naval Self-Defense Forces already has five such aircraft.

These aircraft are modern four-engine and were developed by the Kawasaki Heavy Industries consortium replacing the American-made P-3 Orion.

These P-1 aircraft were designed from the beginning as submarine and naval cooperation hunters. It has a higher speed, range and payload than the corresponding American P-3 Orion.

Its technology is entirely of Japanese origin. Its equipment includes:

– Active phase array radar (AESA) Toshiba HPS-10G covering 360 degrees.

– Powerful tracking cameras with day and infrared imaging for surface targets.

– Torpedoes.

– Mines.

– Sea Bottom bombs.

– Ship missiles.

– Air bombs.

– Arms control system from Smith Aerospace.

– Multiple radar meters.

– Self-defense systems with countermeasures launchers.
