Despite the process between the EU and the UK to finalise Brexit, most citizens in both the UK and the EU want to see Democratic candidate Joe Biden as President of the White House. The change of approach by the US to the issues that concern the two continents to date, should democratic candidate Joe Biden be elected, is seen as certain by Europeans.

The question is how profound this change will be in the approach to issues and in relations between the US, EU, and UK.

In fact, the US introversion that began in 2016 under Donald Trump’s presidency is not going to change. The divergence of views between the US and the EU & the UK has been initiated by the fall of the USSR and the gradual emergence of mainly China and the fall of Russia.
The US will continue, with a President from the Democrats, to try to impose its will on Europeans, but now in a much more elegant and diplomatic way.
On the other hand, the re-election of Donald Trump will cause systemic shock to Europeans, forcing them to plan and implement their own way of more independent sovereignty, without leaving the arms of the US and ending up in China’s arms.
What Europeans expect, with the election of Joe Biden, is for the US President’s behaviour to become predictable and for an end to the open contempt for institutions both in the US and abroad that is a feature of Donald Trump’s presidency.
In addition, they expect both the “channels” of communication between the US and Europe to be restored and for the cessation of the US-EU trade war to take place.
Joe Biden has announced that his election as US President will end the US-EU trade war that began under President Donald Trump, while the US will return to the Paris Agreement on tackling climate change and the World Health Organization.
The problem is whether Donald Trump and his supporters, in the event of defeat, accept the election result or continue with demonstrations plunging the US into chaos, highlighting even more quickly the pathologies of US society such as the racial problem, the almost un audited management of the health crisis, the lack of democracy in the organization of electoral processes, etc.
But both the EU and the UK know that the key pillar of US policy on Europe, namely limiting EU cooperation with Russia and China, is not going to change with the election of Joe Biden to the Presidential race.
This US strategy is condensed into:
- open surveillance of communications on the internet.
- restricting access to the US financial system.
- monitoring of banking transactions affecting trade between European companies and third countries.
which, in the event of a breach, are threatened with heavy fines if they do not comply. The day after the elections will see if these changes will take place between US and their European allies.
