The Canadian government of Prime Minister Mark Carney is seriously considering buying about 60 Saab Gripen E/F fighters from Sweden, while at the same time planning to limit the F-35 fleet it had ordered to just 30 aircraft, according to Canadian media reports.
The original 2023 contract called for the purchase of 88 F-35As from Lockheed Martin, with first deliveries in 2026-2028. However, the review began amid escalating trade tensions with the United States under President Trump, and the Carney government is now considering a mixed fleet that combines the stealth capabilities of the F-35 with the lower operating costs, smaller runway requirements and easier maintenance of the Gripen. Saab promises significant technology transfer and the creation of thousands of jobs in the Canadian aerospace sector, boosting domestic production.
At the same time, Ottawa is negotiating for 5-6 Saab GlobalEye airborne radars, worth more than 5 billion Canadian dollars, abandoning American options such as the Boeing E-7. The move aims to acquire an autonomous surveillance capability, reducing dependence on American services.

Η τελική ανακοίνωση πάντως για το τι θα αγοραστεί από τον Καναδά, αναμένεται μετά τις αμερικανικές βουλευτικές εκλογές του Νοεμβρίου 2026, για να μην οξυνθούν περαιτέρω οι σχέσεις.
