In a surprise move that is changing the balance of power in the Persian Gulf, the Iranian government has announced that it is allowing the Kingdom of Spain to use the Strait of Hormuz with “absolute freedom”. This decision ensures that Spanish ships and tankers will not face any restrictions or barriers that would hinder their navigation.
Spain’s choice is not accidental. Tehran seems to be rewarding Madrid’s “moderate” stance on the crisis or seeking to create a European “rift”.
The country is heavily dependent on LNG imports. Free passage gives it a huge advantage over the rest of Europe.
This move sends the message that Iran is not at war with “the whole world”, but only with those who follow the aggressive Trump-Netanyahu line.
