Russian cruiser with 96 S400 launchers, strikes with 80 missiles at 2,500 km

In the global naval landscape, few ships have commanded as much awe and respect as Russia’s Kirov-class nuclear-powered cruisers.

And today, nearly three decades after its last active service, the Admiral Nakhimov returns — fully modernized and equipped with weapons systems that reshape the military balance in the Arctic and beyond.

The start of its sea trials in July 2025 in the White Sea marks not just the rebirth of a ship, but the revival of an entire strategic philosophy based on projecting power through superiority in air defense and missile warfare.

Floating Fortress – Nakhimov’s Superweapon

With a displacement of 28,000 tons and a length of over 250 meters, the Admiral Nakhimov is by far the largest surface warship in service in the world. However, its real advantage is not its size, but its equipment.

Its combat power combines:

  • 80 guided cruise missiles, including the 3M14T Kalibr for attacking targets at depths of 2,500 kilometers and the supersonic Zircon, which reach speeds of Mach 9.
  • A colossal air defense arsenal, based on the first naval version of the S-400 – making the ship an undisputed leader in the field of naval missile defense.

S-400 at Sea – World First and Absolute Dominance

The integration of the naval S-400 on the Admiral Nakhimov is not just a technological innovation – it is a strategic advantage.

With 96 vertical launch launchers (VLS) for the air defense system, the ship carries a power equivalent to three land-based S-400 battalions.

For comparison, the Nakhimov’s total anti-aircraft power exceeds the combined equivalent weapon systems of many NATO member states.

The use of 40N6 missiles, with a range of up to 400 km and the ability to engage targets at supersonic speeds, creates a multi-layered protection network. The ship can neutralize:

  • Enemy aircraft and drones,
  • Cruise or ballistic missiles,
  • Enemy air-to-air missiles targeting Russian fighters.
This power does not exist anywhere else at sea.

Arctic dominance: The new theater of war

The decision to deploy the Admiral Nakhimov in the Arctic is not accidental. The region is becoming increasingly important, as:

  • Melting ice is opening up new shipping lanes (the Northern Corridor).
  • There is intense competition for energy resources.
  • NATO is increasing its presence in Norway, Greenland and the Baltic states.
Russia needs mobile and powerful anti-aircraft cover in this zone – something that only the Nakhimov can provide, thanks to its nuclear reactors that give it operational autonomy and strategic flexibility.

Defense giant or attack platform?

In addition to air defense, the Nakhimov also functions as a strategic strike platform.
The Kalibr has already proven its effectiveness in Syria and Ukraine.
With the ability to launch 80 missiles in a first strike, the ship is transformed into a super-armed mobile missile system, capable of hitting military bases, airfields, infrastructure and naval units in a radius from Northern Europe to the Middle East.
And all this, with air defense protection of a level superior even to fixed land bases.

Future with S-500 and S-550: Towards the era of space warfare

The capabilities of the Admiral Nakhimov are not exhausted by the existing arsenal. Russian sources report that the future integration of the S-500 and S-550 missile systems is being considered, which can:

  • Neutralize targets in space (satellites),
  • Intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs),
  • Even deal with threats such as hypersonic glide vehicles (such as the American C-HGB).

Monument to Russian power at sea

The Admiral Nakhimov is not a simple weapons system. It is the epitome of the Russian naval strategic philosophy:

  1. Comprehensive control of airspace,
  2. Long-range precision strikes,
  3. Ability to carry out warfare at any radius within Eurasia,
  4. Adaptation to future generations of threats.

By activating it, Russia is signaling that it does not intend to follow the West – it will forge its own path of power.

And as history has proven: when Russia decides to regroup, no one can ignore it.
