A revolutionary new material, Composite Metal Foam (CMF), is poised to transform a variety of industrial sectors from aerospace to military to even transportation. After years of rigorous testing and development, this groundbreaking material is now ready for full-scale production, thanks to Advanced Materials Manufacturing (AMM).
Created by Afsaneh Rabiei, an engineer at North Carolina State University, CMF has proven to be incredibly strong and lightweight, providing unparalleled protection and performance in a variety of applications.
CMF combines the strength of metals such as steel, titanium, and aluminum with the added benefit of being lightweight, thanks to its unique structure of hollow metal bubbles embedded in a metal matrix.
This configuration makes CMF not only highly effective at absorbing kinetic energy, but also significantly lighter than traditional materials such as steel.
For example, according to a 2019 study by Interesting Engineering, vehicle armor made from CMF can withstand .50-inch caliber projectiles with protection comparable to conventional steel armor—but at less than half the weight.
This weight reduction leads to improvements in vehicle performance and fuel efficiency without compromising safety. In addition to its ballistic capabilities, CMF also excels at thermal insulation. Studies have shown that CMF provides superior thermal resistance compared to solid metals.
In one experiment, CMF took twice as long to heat up under intense flame exposure compared to stainless steel, due to air pockets within its structure. This heat resistance makes CMF an ideal material for a range of applications that require protection from extreme temperatures, such as hazardous materials storage, spacecraft, and fire-resistant structures.
Additionally, CMF has shown significant potential in radiation defense. Proven effective against X-rays and Gamma rays, it could play a key role in protecting sensitive materials in space exploration, nuclear facilities, and other environments with high radiation exposure.
With its diverse capabilities and innovative design, CMF is set to revolutionize industries by offering superior performance, safety, and efficiency. Now in production, AMM is accepting orders for customized CMF solutions, allowing for customized designs to meet specific engineering needs.
