The US Navy has announced that it will launch a special investigation due to suspicions that 26 new ships in its fleet have defects in various parts of their hulls. It is believed that the problems in question stem from improper welding of the vessels at the Newport News Naval Shipyard.
Faulty 26 New US Ships?
More specifically, in a report published at the beginning of this month (“Letters to Congress on Welds“), the secretary of the US Navy stated that these defects are found in a total of 26 ships of the US fleet, including ships that are in active operation as well as ships that are still under construction.
Although he said the defects are not expected to adversely affect US Navy operations, the service is considering whether to take legal action against the shipyard alleging violations of the contract to build these ships. The official investigation was undertaken by the US Department of Justice, which is expected to proceed with lawsuits in the coming months.
