According to Ukrainian and Western media, several hundred Russian soldiers have been surrounded by Ukrainian troops for 2 weeks in the ruins of a former chemical plant in the Volchansk settlement area of Kharkiv. Volchansk is today the epicenter of the fighting in the Ukrainian region in question.
Hundreds of Russian Soldiers Surrounded
Based on western reports, an entire Russian battalion of the 83rd Parachute Brigade is currently surrounded by the Ukrainian army, making its future very dark. It is estimated that this Russian battalion consists of about 400 soldiers.
Two weeks earlier, the Ukrainian military released images on social media showing the shelling of a group of Russian soldiers with US-supplied GBU-39 bombs.
The approximately 400 Russian soldiers are isolated in an industrial facility near Volchansk. Their isolation is a result of the actions of the Ukrainian army, which is said to have planned in advance the encirclement of the Moscow battalion. In particular, Kiev reports that the Russians are completely trapped at the site and there is no escape route from the factory.
The Russian military leadership decided to send the 83rd Brigade to the Kharkiv front in mid-June, after the progress made in a few days by the Russian advance in the area. Before this formation, soldiers of the same Russian unit had participated in battles for Chasov Yar, near Bakhmut.
From the first days in Volchank, Russian paratroopers clashed with Ukrainian forces, who attacked them with howitzers. Although well-trained paratroopers, the Kremlin decided to send the 2,000-man 83rd Brigade into the battle for Volchansk with armored vehicles for added protection. However, things did not go according to plan and as we mentioned above some Russians found themselves trapped in a factory in the area, at least according to Kiev. The remaining soldiers of the brigade are said to have retreated.
