Glances At the Spectacles World

  • Enquête sur un Scandale d’État (Investigation into a government scandal)

2021Drama – 2h 14m – 2,5 in scale 1-5

Director: Thierry de Peretti, Interpetations: Rosdi Zem, Pio Marmai, Roskiti Zem, Vincent Lindon, Xylie Moulier, Alexis Manedi, Antonia Vyresi, Lykie Gallo, Valeria Vryni Tedeschi, Tristan Ylloa.

A true story of police corruption is brought to the screen in the form of a suspenseful thriller from the creator of The Corsican, Thierry de Peretti. With an excellent cast of actors at his disposal, the French director tells the story of Hubert Antoine (Rosdie Zem), a long-time drug informant who decides to turn against his former employers while uncovering a huge scandal involving the the head of the corps himself (Vincent Lindon). To achieve this, he works with Stefan, a dedicated reporter for the newspaper Liberation. The two will clash with a powerful system of power, ending up in court and putting their physical and mental health at risk.

The French film adopts most of the conventions of the classic thriller, as it gradually reveals the mechanism of corruption, “playing” along with the viewer as to the credibility of what is said. A key point, as we said here, are the performances of the protagonists: the very active of late Rosdi Zem, who perfectly embodies the mysterious, limber character of the informant, but also the great Vincent Lyndon, who stands opposite as the leader of the prosecution who acts with the methods of those it is supposed to fight.

  • FARGO

1996Thriller – 1h 38m – 5 in scale 1-5

Director: Joel Coen, Ethal Coen, Interpetations: William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi.

One of the greatest films of the Coen brothers, and of the entire 1990s, is being re-released this week in a digitally restored copy. A car salesman (William Macy), in desperate financial straits, decides to organize the kidnapping of his wife, hoping to collect the ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. However, the job is assigned to two unscrupulous but ruthless criminals, who spread chaos and death. A pregnant – and fearless – policewoman (Frances McDormand) rushes after them, who will undertake to solve the case. The Cohens create a great atmosphere by placing their police action in the snowy American Midwest. Almost forgotten by the rest of the world, their heroes fight against a background of endless white, for incredibly petty goals or for others as self-evident as happiness; always in bittersweet tones, somewhere between the sarcastic black humor and the harsh realism that characterizes the whole cinematic 90s.
