The EU Commission decided to invest significant financial resources of 832 million euros in the research and development of 41 defense projects in European Union countries.
The aim of Brussels is to develop the capabilities of the European bloc in critical technologies, which could give greater defense autonomy to the Old Continent. Among the projects that received funding we find the E-NASCOS (European Naval Collaborative Surveillance Operational Standard) whose main mission is to ensure the maritime superiority of surface ships, developing new protocols, interfaces and target architecture that allow dealing with new and asymmetric aerial threats. E-NACSOS is expected to improve the ability to detect, classify and monitor these threats.
Also of interest is ODIN’S EYE II, a space-based early warning platform for missile threats, in which 14 EU member states and Norway are currently cooperating.
Finally, it is worth noting that the European Defense Fund (EDF) has decided to invest a total of approximately 8 billion euros in the defense sector for the period 2021-2027.
