Silvio Berlusconi: The “System” of the “Modern Caesar”

Historians of the future are expected to pay special attention to Berlusconi’s “capital”, in an attempt to analyze what has been happening in the course of Italy in the last fifty years. Events that were determined to a very large extent by big names and one of them is undoubtedly the former Italian Prime Minister who passed away today.

The life of the tycoon from Milan is of particular interest, not only because Cavaliere managed to rise in the economic life of Italy, but mainly because he influenced (to an incredible degree) almost every area of Italian life.

Where does one begin and where does one end? The way in which Berlusconi managed to dominate touches the limits of the myth, to the point that many will wonder if all that surrounds the “myth” finally corresponds to reality.

What is certain, however, concerns the dominance (this is the word that describes it all) of Berlusconi in all the critical areas that affect the progress and development of a society.

The activity in the mass media, the involvement in football, the businesses that “sprouted” like… mushrooms in a foggy financial landscape and finally, politics. One can easily claim to have left nothing standing, influencing everyone and everything, with the ultimate goal of personal gain.

Looking at the developments in the economic, political and sports life of Europe, it is impossible to encounter in any country of the “Old” continent, what Silvio Berlusconi did in Italy.

The unique way to enforce

It is truly incredible the way he managed to impose (because we are clearly talking about imposition) his “will”, taking advantage of a situation of insecurity and uncertainty that tormented Italian society. There is no doubt that he was a strong player and knew the “rules” of the game very well. There were not a few times when he himself established specific rules to promote his interests.

What did Berlusconi do in a few words in his first steps? He made sure to sweep the “system” (which breathed the spoils) with the aim of establishing a new model of dominance.

A model that was primarily based on the principle of one, on “pillars” of liberalism and unrestrained capitalism. Berlusconi never hid it, he felt omnipotent and this belief of his “came” from the inability of the institutions to limit the phenomena that developed during his days in Italy.

We said, Berlusconi wanted the new model to have the “I” of the Cavaliere in a prominent position, and this “I” was undoubtedly very large.

The football

It needs special mention that his involvement in football was completely successful as Milan’s course during Berlusconi’s days is (and was) impressive. Berlusconi took everything with the “Rossoneri” and managed to create an “empire” in football. Not of Italy, but of all Europe.

Berlusconi made sure to “pass” into every Italian home through television and the ownership of several television stations led to the broadcasting of messages aimed at the Italian tycoon’s later political involvement.

Berlusconi had ambitions, he never hid it. And these ambitions remained (probably) unsatisfied as long as he himself was not sitting at the “helm” of his country.

The goal was always a “steering wheel”

Because the “helm” of Milan is good, the command in the channels is good, but Silvio would not “compromise” with anything less than the “helm” of Italy. He had this in mind for many years before he officially entered the political arena of the neighboring country, believing that in order for Italy to move forward, it had to be ruled by a successful businessman.

And in a similar way of management, as if running a company. His dominance of the Italian political scene was “sweeping”, as Berlusconi used the media to promote his ideas, and in the person of the “boss” of Milan, the Italian right found its leader.

That’s where Silvio “stepped”

Berlusconi “stepped” in areas where his words resonated and the way he governed was based on the models of his own aesthetics. After all, we said, he had dismantled the system not because it was bad for society but because he wanted another model, applied to his own business and economic needs.

The truth is that Berlusconi “swept” the Italian political scene and caused many problems in progressive fronts and in general the Italian Left.

Maybe it’s a sign of the times, maybe not. But what is indisputable is that the former prime minister of Italy managed to name a specific course of action, in almost every manifestation of human activity.

Berlusconism” as a political-economic term

So it was no accident that the term “Berlusconism” was used over and over for decades to describe a new system of governance and political behavior. He has faced Italian justice on several occasions. There were dozens of accusations of scandal, but in the end Berlusconi remained a central figure in Italy’s political, economic and sporting life.

It is also worth noting here that his popularity was hardly affected by the aforementioned scandals. Not even the infamous parties he “set up” from time to time in his mansions.

The media in Silvio’s hands certainly played an important role in this, because quite simply Cavaliere had left nothing to chance. Nothing to chance because you never know…
