Canada wants 12 new submarines, $60 billion budget

The Canadian Navy wants to procure 12 new submarines with a budget of $60 billion. However, industry sources in the country say that the total cost of submarines (acquisition and use) may even approach $100 billion, citing as an example the program to build 15 new frigates, the cost of which has increased, from $25 to $ 80 billion. Today Canada maintains in service four “Victoria” (formerly “Upholder”) class submarines, which it acquired second-hand from Great Britain in 2000-2004. As of 2017 the submarines are in trouble and by 2023 $1.9 billion has been spent on repairs and support.
