Canada’s population increased by one million Citizens in one year

The increase is attributed by the statistics office to attracting immigrants to renew the workforce – Trudeau government’s goal of 500,000 arrivals a year by 2025.

Canada’s population will grow by more than a million people in 2022, the country’s statistics office said.

The country now has -estimated- 39,566,248 inhabitants from 38,516,138 in 2021, an increase of 2.7% which is also the largest recorded since 1957.

The increase is attributed by the statistical office to the attraction of immigrants to address staff shortages, but also to reverse the aging population trend. 96% of this new population were immigrants from third countries

The influx of population also has some effects, the statistical authority points out, related to housing, infrastructure and service provision.

Justin Trudeau’s government has tried to attract more immigrants to the country, with the goal of reaching 500,000 a year by 2025. Many are from war zones (such as Ukraine) or humanitarian crises (such as Turkey and Syria after the earthquake).
