A sharp escalation on the border between Kosovo and Serbia began a few days ago, while it is known that Serbia asked NATO to send Serbian special forces to the border with Kosovo, but received an unofficial answer that such requests will not be met.
Given the current situation, the probability that a new armed conflict between Kosovo and Serbia will start is quite high, while Kosovo will apply for EU membership, which is extremely embarrassing for Serbia, as in this case it will mean that the E.U. recognizes the borders of Kosovo and, consequently, the agreements previously concluded between Pristina and Belgrade will cease to exist.”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic plans to ask the NATO mission in writing for permission to send units of the Serbian security forces to Kosovo. This became known after another deterioration of the situation between Belgrade and Pristina.
Τhis document says that Serbia can send up to a thousand military, police and customs officers to Orthodox religious sites, Serb-dominated areas and border crossings. True, such a deployment must be approved by the KFOR commander.
Another round of escalation of the conflict occurred after Serbian police officer Dejan Padic was arrested by Albanian security forces accusing him of attacking Kosovo police officers.
Almost immediately after this incident, the Serbs in the northern part of Kosovo and Metohija began to build barricades, while skirmishes took place in several settlements.
Members of the Albanian ROSU special units attacked a few hours ago with weapons and armored vehicles the facilities of the large dam on Lake Gazivode, against Serbian protesters.
Armored and Albanian commandos chased the dam guard out of his building and tore down the Serbian flags that were there. Thousands of Serbs gathered because of the arrest of former policeman Dejan Pantić in Jarinje police station and to prevent his transfer to Pristina.
Since the morning, KFOR helicopters have been flying over Zubin Potok and Leposavić with Polish KFOR commandos who have moved in earlier.
In this context, the President of Serbia addressed a speech to the nation, in which he condemned Pristina’s intention to apply for EU membership. According to Vucic, only European countries, which Kosovo is not, can join the EU.
It is recalled that the Serbian Autonomous Province of Kosovo Metohija unilaterally declared its independence in February 2008. Against the recognition of Kosovo are Russia, China, India and 57 other states, including five EU member states.
“Pristina has completely violated the Washington Agreement and will officially apply for EU membership on the 15th,” Vucic said in a statement. “Today, I sent a letter to the presidents and prime ministers of five countries that have not recognized the independence of the EU, because only independent and sovereign states can seek membership, not those that are not recognized by half the world.
In particular, he sent a letter to the leaders of Cyprus, Greece, Slovakia, Spain and Romania and thanked them for their support and emphasized that our common struggle showed that the principles of international law are the only strong principle we can insist on all together. They are our friends and I think the letter will mean something,” Vucic explained.
We all know that the Balkans are the soft underbelly of Europe and that World War I started here, and given the US-EU standoff with Russia in Ukraine, opening a second front of operations between Serbia and Kosovo would have disastrous consequences for Europe.
