EU: 5G communications on planes and Wi-Fi on highways

Airlines will now be able to provide the latest fifth-generation (5G) technology on their aircraft alongside previous-generation mobile technologies, as the European Commission updated its implementing decision on radio spectrum for in-flight mobile communications, setting out specific frequencies for in-flight 5G technology.

Thus, passengers on EU flights will be able to use the features and capabilities of their mobile phones, just like on land-based 5G mobile networks. 5G technology will enable innovative services for consumers and growth opportunities for European businesses.

Since 2008, a Commission Implementing Decision has reserved certain frequencies for mobile communications on aircraft, allowing airlines to provide messaging, phone call and data services to passengers on EU flights. The update of the Commission Implementing Decision on mobile communications on aircraft paves the way for the widespread deployment of 5G services.

The service is provided inside the cabin of aircraft equipped with special network equipment (so-called “picocell”), which connects users and routes calls, text messages and data, usually via a satellite network, between the aircraft and the terrestrial mobile network .

Furthermore, the Commission amended an implementing decision on 5 GHz frequency bands, which makes available frequency bands for Wi-Fi in road transport, e.g. in cars and buses. The amending decision paves the way for innovations in the automotive industry and, potentially, metaverse applications.

According to the amendment to the implementing decision, Member States will make the 5 GHz frequency bands available for use by road vehicles as soon as possible and by 30 June 2023 at the latest.
