The European shipyards of Four countries (Italy-France-Greece-Spain) signed a preliminary agreement for the creation of an MMPC consortium with the aim of building a European Corvette in the next three years.
In July 2022, the European Commission decided positively on the proposal submitted by the consortium led by Naviris together with Fincantieri, Naval Group and Navantia for the construction of the Modular and Multirole Patrol Corvette (MMPC).
What was decided yesterday at the EU headquarters
Following this decision, the managing directors of the four companies signed today a pre-consortium agreement, the aim of which is to implement the EC decision.
The clear objective of the consortium is to maximize synergies and cooperation between the European shipbuilding industries, for the development of a new ship, named EPC, which will aim to ensure European sovereignty at sea.
The European Corvette will be a smart, innovative, affordable, sustainable, interoperable and flexible vessel, designed to meet a wide range of future missions in an ever-evolving global context.
Based on innovative and disruptive technologies, this program will make a significant contribution to European dominance in the maritime sector, strengthening European industry, increasing cooperation, efficiency and reducing overlaps in defense spending.
The main objective of the agreement signed today will be to develop the initial design of the ship, maximizing innovations, synergies and cooperation between the European shipbuilding industry through the participation of: 4 countries under the flag of PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation) (Italy , France, Spain and Greece) while 6 co-financing countries (Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Denmark and Norway) 3 main European shipbuilding industries (Fincantieri, Naval Group and Navantia) together with 40 naval systems and equipment companies from 12 EU countries
The European Corvette will be a future innovative warship program developed in a cooperative manner by several navies and members of the European Union, under the banner of PESCO.
Four countries have officially joined the project (Italy, France, Spain and Greece), which will jointly define the requirements for a Class 2 surface unit approximately 110 meters long and 3000 tons capable of replacing in the near future several series of ships, from patrol Ships up to Frigates.
In addition, Norway and Denmark support the project through the participation of their national industry.
The EPC (European Corvette) project is strongly supported by the European Commission and the participating Member States.
The European Defense Fund also announced the name of the ship characterizing it as MMPC – Modular and Multirole Patrol Corvette.
With the ambition to succeed, the program intends to develop with the expertise of various specialized European companies, in line with the strategy of the European Commission.

The EU Corvette versions will be as follows:
1. The version for naval patrol missions that aims to satisfy Italian and Spanish requirements.
2. The long-range version for France, which also seeks high ship speed.
3. The combat version exclusively for Greece, which will have the possibility of flexible articulated armor in order to adapt to new conditions, in terms of naval platforms and combat systems.
