The UAE stand was awarded the Golden Lion of the 17th Venice Biennale of Architecture for the best national participation in the event. Architects Wael Al Awar and Kenichi Teramoto with the “Wetland” pavilion presented an innovative form of cement, based on the recycling of industrial salt water. The chairman of the Jury, Kazuyo Sejima, said “it encourages us to consider the relationship between production and waste, opening up new construction possibilities between state-of-the-art technology.” The award for best participation went to the Berlin team Raumlabor, which proposed alternative forms of use of the former Tempelhof airport and a district in Alexanderplatz.
