The History of the Left and Right Parties In the Framework of Democracy

At the core of the Democratic State is the political controversy. That is why there can be no democracy in practice with a single party. In most democracies, the political confrontation moves mainly on the Right-Left axis, which from the French Revolution until today, despite any problems, continues to dominate.

However, despite the timeless and historical confrontation, the political developments are not determined by the specific axis. To analyze this axis, we must move in two areas:

1. The Ideological Sector

It includes the economic preferences regarding the way of redistribution of the produced wealth of the country, but also regarding the changes regardless of whether they are progressive etc. The Right faction bases its ideology on the creation of wealth and its reservation regarding the changes of existing situations (conservatism). On the other hand, the Left faction promotes the redistribution of wealth and social change (progressivism).

2. The Historical Sector

Whereas Historical field is based on the formation of the political identity that reveals choices and preferences of the past, but which are reproduced in an almost mechanical way. The two approaches are not always compatible with each other. But they both have the logic of conflict at their core. Without the Left faction, society is headed for extreme social polarization and stagnation. Without the Right faction, society becomes poorer, it moves towards the “wheels” of the social roller coaster and the adoption of dangerous perceptions.

It is the political conflict that may seem unbridgeable but leads us to compositions of all kinds. These compositions often reflect and shape global trends such as the New Deal, the Marshall Plan, Reagan, and Thatcher policies in applying the neoliberal theory of wealth creation, the Joe Biden Infrastructure Program.

These world historical cycles come mainly from the rise of inequalities and the destruction to unprecedented levels of wealth produced. Today, however, the people need the synthesis between the Left and the Right faction equally and not the polarization and division that will only bring backwardness.
