Covax Vaccination Program: Saving the Planet Against Covid-19

Based on the words of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, addressing the UN Security Council, that ten countries on the planet manage 75% of all vaccinations while one hundred and thirty UN member states do not have a single dose of vaccine at their disposal, it shows that most of the world’s states are at the mercy of the pandemic.

In addition, he called for cooperation between scientists and vaccine-producing companies and willing financiers to stop a highly unacceptable situation. The Covid-19 pandemic has killed 2.4 million people, while those infected exceed 110 million.

The fact that new mutations of the virus are constantly coming to the fore, raising doubts about whether vaccines can deal with them effectively is because an increasing proportion of the world’s population remains without protection.

In addition, citizens who are vaccinated if they meet people from other countries who are not vaccinated allow the pandemic to reignite.

The Covax program includes the production and distribution of vaccines around the globe. The EU is funding the Covax program for €850m and the total amount raised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) by the beginning of 2021 was €2.5bn.

But this amount is not enough as larger funds are needed to obtain 2.3 billion doses of vaccines in countries that do not have the financial means. Again, the needs of the entire population of the earth cannot be met.

The only issue that can change their minds in the developed countries of the world is to convince their governments that the cost of fully vaccinating the population of countries that do not have the means to obtain them is exceedingly small in relation to the consequences for the global economy of a vaccination program that does not cover the planet.
