The Royal Canadian Navy has announced its selection of its new CSC (Canadian Surface Combatant) frigate. This surface ship is rich and balanced in terms of its equipment and will be the focus / standard point of reference for all future shipbuilding.
This CSC ship will have a displacement of 7,800 tons, something that due to its size and equipment should be called a destroyer and not a frigate. Corresponding sizes of frigates in other countries have much smaller displacements. More specifically, LCS Freedom (USA) (2,800 tons), MEKO 200 (Germany) (3,200 tons), FDI Belhara (France) (4,460 tons) & Type 26 (UK) (6,900 tons).

Based on this ship, the Government of Canada has decided to create in the future a naval fleet with a single class of fifteen (15) surface vessels that will be used for all types of missions. The choice of this ship was made based on three main parameters:
1. It is more suitable for Canada’s business missions and uses, based on its geography and its costs for a specific fleet size.
2. It has the maximum degree of cost / performance ratio.
3. Technological developments have given this ship design the opportunity to develop a modern and innovative ship / model.
According to the information released by the Royal Canadian Navy, this surface ship will carry the following equipment:
– 127mm cannon
– NSM long-range cruise missiles (185 km or 100 nautical miles). Designed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg, 5th generation with subsonic speed.
– CMC Mk41 (32 cells) vertical launchers to launch RGM / UGM-109E Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles with a range of 1700 km or 900 nautical miles.
– Sea Ceptor system with 24 missiles in ExLS launchers.
– SM-2 Block IIIC missiles.
– Radar AESA LMC SPY-7.
– Complete electronic war suite.
– Battle System AEGIS-LMC CMS 330.
– COLDOC (Combined Diesel-Electric or Gas Propulsion System) propulsion system with four Rolls-Royce MTU engines, one Rolls-Royce MT30 turbine and two GE electric motors.
– CH-47 Chinook helicopters can operate on its deck.
