The first major solo exhibition in the UK dedicated to Francisco de Zurbarán opens in the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery, celebrating one of Spain’s leading 17th-century painters. Arranged across seven rooms, nearly 50 works – from stunning life-size depictions of saints to contemplative still lifes – cover the chronological and iconographic range of the artist’s career, who is remembered in art history for the immediacy and profound emotional power of his painting.
