Exhibition: Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art

The first exhibition on British soil entirely dedicated to the fashion house Schiaparelli, it could only be hosted in the world’s largest museum of decorative arts, covering an entire century of style and elegance. The evolution of the house from 1920 to the present day, Elsa Schiaparelli as a pioneer of interwar fashion and her relationship with London, are captured in garments from the house’s archives, accessories, jewelry, paintings, photographs, sculptures, furniture and perfumes, exhibited alongside works by her contemporaries, such as Pablo Picasso and Man Ray. Exhibition: Marcel Duchamp

Known for his so-called “readymades,” everyday objects that he modified to appear as sculptural works of art, Marcel Duchamp, perhaps more than any other artist, challenged established notions of what art is today. For that very reason, this exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art marks a significant moment for the French-American artist, being the first North American retrospective of his work in more than 50 years. Painting, sculpture, film, drawing, and print are presented chronologically, spanning six decades of Duchamp’s career. Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA)

Exhibition: Helen Frankenthaler

The Basel Museum of Fine Arts is presenting the largest European exhibition to date of the American representative of abstract expressionism this spring. For Frankenthaler, who became known for her revolutionary soak-stain technique – applying diluted paint to canvas without a primer, creating watery, undulating fields of color – this is her first solo exhibition in Switzerland and, through her large-scale canvases, the viewer comes into contact with the concept of mid-century femininity, along with many other aspects of the influential artist’s life.
