Aircraft carrier with the Chinese Jiutian, the world’s largest unmanned aircraft carrying 100 drones

China has conducted the first test flight of the Jiutian ss-uav, the largest unmanned aerial vehicle ever built. The aircraft is designed as a high-altitude platform with a “mothership” role, capable of carrying and launching massive swarms of drones. Its appearance adds a new, complex challenge to the armed forces of the United States and its allies in the Indo-Pacific, directly affecting air defense, naval operations and overall strategic deterrence in the region.

A leap in Chinese UAV capabilities

According to Chinese media, the Jiutian was developed by the state-owned Xi’an Chida Aircraft Parts Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and made its maiden flight in Shaanxi Province. The test revealed a platform designed to unleash and coordinate dozens of smaller drones, a capability that could overwhelm U.S. and allied air defenses across the Indo-Pacific theater.

While the flight has been officially confirmed, details remain limited. However, open-source data and presentations at the 2024 Zhuhai Air Show suggest an aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of more than 20 tons and a payload of about 6,000 kilograms.

Armament and unique architecture

The Jiutian has eight external weapons bays, capable of carrying air-to-air missiles, anti-ship weapons, and precision-guided bombs. What fundamentally differentiates it from other UAVs is its internal drone bay, designed to house and launch over 100 small unmanned aerial vehicles, including loitering munitions and kamikaze-type UAVs, capable of autonomously attacking land and naval targets.

The aircraft is reportedly powered by two high-bypass turbofan engines and has a wingspan of over 35 meters, comparable in size to that of a narrow-body airliner.

Off-the-frontline role

The Jiutian’s large physical footprint limits its low-observability capabilities, but its design is not aimed at penetrating heavily defended areas. Instead, it operates as a remote drone launch platform, staying out of high-risk areas and launching swarms of autonomous systems for precision strikes and electronic warfare operations.

The Power of Swarms and Artificial Intelligence

The real destabilizing potential of Jiutian lies in the ability to deploy drone swarms. In such missions, dozens or hundreds of drones act in coordination, exchanging data and adapting in real time. Unlike traditional UAVs, swarms are based on distributed artificial intelligence, allowing collective decision-making without direct human guidance.

This makes them harder to intercept, more flexible and capable of performing complex missions such as SEAD, communications jamming and saturation strikes.

Operational implications and conflict scenarios

On a practical level, Jiutian can saturate radars, neutralize anti-aircraft batteries and strike command centers with minimal risk to human personnel. On a large scale, such platforms could alter the balance of power, replacing traditional manned strike packages with massive autonomous swarms.

In a conflict scenario around Taiwan, the Jiutian could unleash massive waves of loitering munitions against air bases, missile installations, and ports, aiming to overwhelm air defenses in the first wave.

Threat to US bases and naval forces

US bases in Guam, Okinawa and the Philippines would be within operational range. Despite the existence of systems such as Aegis and THAAD, countering low-cost, high-volume drone swarms remains extremely difficult.

In the South China Sea, the Jiutian could be used to impose air superiority over contested areas, targeting surveillance aircraft, patrol boats and even aircraft carrier strike groups.

Industrial base and internal contradictions

The development of the Jiutian relies on a strong dual-use ecosystem, with commercial drone giants providing the technological foundation for military applications. At the same time, the People’s Liberation Army is facing internal turmoil and corruption purges, which have affected the reliability of some weapons systems. Unmanned systems, however, appear to be evolving at a faster and less centralized innovation model.

A cautionary tale for the future

Although still in the early stages of testing, the Jiutian could become the core of China’s next-generation air warfare doctrine, which emphasizes massive, expendable, and networked power. For the United States and its allies, the message is clear: the future of warfare will not be determined solely by low observability or speed, but by the ability to produce, coordinate, and counter autonomous systems on a massive scale. As China pushes the boundaries of what drone warfare can achieve, the challenge for democratic countries is to accelerate innovation, develop effective swarm countermeasure technologies, and rethink the fundamental architecture of defense.

The Jiutian is not just another drone. It is a strategic warning that the era of swarm warfare has already begun — and China aspires to be at the forefront.
