LY-1: a… large laser system!

Many things were impressive at the recent military parade in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II (which was designed to impress with a super-production by old Soviet standards that it certainly surpassed), but some caught more attention than others.

One of them was the ship-borne high-power laser system called the LY-1, although the announcer’s description confused the situation, as it referred to it as a “naval system,” which brought to mind the appearance of such a system on the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s Type 071 LPD last year.

It is estimated that this is a land application, although rather cumbersome, due to the giant vehicle that houses the power source, which may however be intended for marines.
