2) Analysis
A special artificial intelligence algorithm (back in the 1980s!) analyzes:
if there are too many signs of a nuclear attack and there is silence from the command, then the next stage begins.
3) Control signal
A special missile with a radio transmitter is launched from the base and when it reaches a certain height it transmits combat orders to all ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles), submarines and mobile complexes.
4) Counterattack
All missiles that receive the signal are launched, we are talking about all of Russia’s nuclear missiles together…
Why is this scary but logical?
The “Perimeter” was created not to start, but to ensure retaliation. This is called the deterrence strategy:
- Don’t you dare strike first – we will take revenge, even if we die.
- It does not work without control.
- It is usually deactivated. It is activated in times of serious threat, by decision of the top command.
The system has been modernized
The system was modernized in the 2010s and is now called “Perimeter-RC”. It is integrated with modern communications, satellites, air defense and strategic missile forces. Russia continues to support this system.
The button that no one presses
The Perimeter system also served as an important element in preventing false alarms and hasty decisions. Once the system was activated, the top command could be sure that even if they were destroyed, a retaliatory strike would be carried out automatically.
Currently, the system remains in operation and is regularly upgraded, constituting one of the elements that ensure nuclear stability and a guaranteed retaliatory strike if necessary.
