Gaza: We have no right to remain silent – We have no right to turn a blind eye

Things are painful: right now in Gaza, a strategy is unfolding on the part of a government that can only be described as far-right and whose vision is not the security of Israel but the expulsion of an entire population from an entire region, by making their lives unlivable.

Because it is clear that over 53,000 dead, most of them civilians, destroyed infrastructure, destroyed building stock and obstacles to the entry of humanitarian aid that make it possible for children to die of hunger visible cannot be considered “defensive operations”.

It is clear that we have long since moved beyond the question of seeking justice for October 7th.

For some time now, we have been on the ground of the Israeli far-right’s plan to solve the problem by forcing, in one way or another, a large part of the Palestinians to take the path of refuge again to escape the bombings and hunger.

When a government reaches the point of bombing schools and hospitals and using hunger as a weapon, then it is clear that it must feel that the “international community” is against it.

Because let’s not kid ourselves: the Netanyahu government is doing all this because it knows that at the end of the day the US, the EU and other “Western” powers will support it, because they consider Israel an outpost of the West.

That is why it is important at this time for governments to listen to the demand of global civil society and to make it clear that Israel does not have the support of the international community. That its policy is not legitimized. That economic and military relations cannot continue “as normal”. To feel that it has no support and to be forced to change course.

Europe must send the message that Europe is not indifferent to what is happening and cannot continue to have the same level of cooperation as long as no real steps are taken to stop the humanitarian catastrophe and to launch a truly sustainable solution.

Otherwise we are part of the problem. We are – whether we want to admit it or not – complicit.
