Romania: The front of intra-Western ideological confrontation (liberal-globalists Brussels) vs (populist-nationalists Washington)

An international outcry erupted on Wednesday, February 26, when former Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was provisionally arrested on six charges amid a police raid on some of his closest supporters as he prepared to file his candidacy in the May runoff.

The first round last December was annulled on the grounds that an anonymous actor promoted him on TikTok before the vote, but it was later discovered that this was simply another party’s marketing campaign gone wrong.

Georgescu’s election could have thwarted the US “deep state”’s plans to escalate its war on Russia. This analysis gains more ground after the result of the first round of the election was annulled. Just before the latest developments, US Vice President JD Vance criticized the Romanian government as undemocratic for what it did last December.

Then, after the events of Wednesday (2/26), Elon Musk retweeted a video by State Department whistleblower Mike Benz describing the “deep state” interest in Romania. Benz drew attention to how Romania agreed to host the largest NATO air base in Europe and has played a critical role in smuggling Pakistani military equipment into Ukraine.

These are important points, as is the “Moldovan corridor” as it completes its final stretch stretching from the Mediterranean ports of Greece to western Ukraine. But there is more to this than geopolitics. The ideological element is arguably just as important.

The imposition of governments and the patriotic/populist revolution

Romania has been under liberal-globalist control for decades after these forces exploited the dysfunctions of the political system and endemic corruption to continually install candidates of their choice in power.

Georgescu represents the most promising opportunity in years for a populist-patriotic revolution that could finally resolve the aforementioned systemic challenges and thus restore Romania’s sovereignty.

His references to history, religion, and national interests truly resonate with many of his compatriots. As such, he could be described as a “Romanian Trump,” but both political figures simply express the populist-nationalist zeal that has been spreading throughout the West for years in reaction to the sociopolitical and economic excesses of the liberal-globalizers.

He is a self-made man, just like Trump, and both simply embody the trend of the times. Like all revolutionaries or counter-revolutionaries, however, they also face a lot of resistance.

It took Trump over eight years to be able to neutralize the subversive conspiracies of the “deep state,” so it is not surprising that Georgescu, who has only recently begun his political career, is facing problems

Europe (liberal-globalists) has prepared the indictment against Georgescu

Trump was a pioneer, while Georgescu is following in his footsteps, so it is possible that the former could give Georgescu a helping hand to significantly accelerate the time it takes to neutralize the subversive conspiracies of the “deep state”. This is where the ongoing struggle between the US and the EU is important.

Vance’s speech in Munich justified Putin’s prediction of a summer 2022 political change in Europe and made it clear that the US stands with all populist-patriotic movements on the continent.

The latest attempt by the Romanian/European “deep state” to eliminate Georgescu is essentially a gauntlet thrown to the Trump administration by its liberal-globalist opponents in Brussels, who fully support Bucharest.

They want to test whether the US will do something in response to the EU coup in Romania.

The new front between liberal-globalists and populist-nationalists is in Bucharest

What is unfolding in this Balkan country is nothing less than the opening of another front of the New Cold War, albeit this time an ideological front between liberal-globalists and populist-nationalists, which also pits nominal NATO allies against each other as ideologically the EU and the US are on opposite sides.

We will see if the Trump administration does what it takes to ensure that Georgescu is allowed to run for president in the May re-election and that the process is truly free and fair instead of flawed as usual.

To that end, targeted sanctions against Romanians, threats to withdraw troops from Romania, the suspension of arms contracts, and the extension of full political support to populist-nationalist protesters could force the authorities to reconsider the wisdom of doing Brussels’ bidding.

At the same time, an extensive pressure campaign could also backfire if the German-led EU exploits it as a pretext to deepen its already enormous control over Romania, although that could also backfire.

The pledge by the next German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to “achieve independence” from the US is a threat in the air as military, economic, and energy factors make it much easier said than done.

If provoked, as it could soon be if the German-led EU pushes back against the potentially imminent US pressure campaign in Romania, then Trump could use each of these factors as a weapon in his own campaign against the EU and Germany, and he has a good chance of winning on both fronts.

Overall, what has just happened in Romania places the country at the epicenter of the intra-Western ideological confrontation in the context of the New Cold War, which will determine the future of Europe.

The liberal-globalizers will either consolidate their power by completely defying Trump, possibly at enormous cost to their countries, or they will be democratically deposed by populist-patriots who share the same worldview as his team.

This fight is historic, and the consequences of its outcome will have consequences for decades.
