Nammo has developed the 25 mm x 137 APEX PGU-47/U round, a new type of aircraft ammunition designed to enhance close air combat capabilities. The round is specifically designed for the F-35A’s GAU-22/A gun, offering increased range, accuracy and lethality over previous generations of ammunition. A contract for its production and delivery was officially signed in January, marking a significant step in equipping modern combat aircraft with more advanced ammunition.
One of the key advantages of the APEX is its multi-role capability, combining armor-piercing and explosive effects in a single cartridge. This allows it to be effective against a wide range of targets, including armored, semi-armored and light vehicles, as well as airborne threats. It features a tungsten carbide piercing warhead, which provides strong penetration performance, while offering an explosive and incendiary effect after penetration.

The ammunition offers increased range, maintaining its velocity over longer distances due to its advanced aerodynamic design. APEX has greater accuracy, increasing the probability of hitting targets. Another unique feature is its ability to deliver hits even when ricocheting.
To improve safety and performance, the round is equipped with the FMU-171/U double safety fuse, which ensures a safe arming distance after firing from an aircraft. It also features a time-delay fuse allowing it to penetrate before detonating, maximizing damage inside the target. In addition, the APEX also functions as a trajectory indicator.
