The strategic city of Toretsk is now officially part of the Russian Federation, the Russian Defense Ministry announced this a short while ago, as its forces captured the city in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine after months of fighting.

In the Russian Defense Ministry’s announcement, Toretsk is called Dzerzhinsky, as the city in eastern Ukraine was previously called, in honor of Felix Dzerzhinsky, founder of the Cheka, the notorious secret police in the Soviet Union.

The death toll for Ukrainian forces was high. As the Russian Defense Ministry reported:

“The Ukrainian armed forces have lost 26,000 soldiers in five months of fighting for Dzerzhinsk (Toretsk).

Russian troops destroyed more than 240 tanks and other armored vehicles there, as well as more than 340 field guns and mortars.

The control of the settlement paves the way for Russian armed forces to liberate Konstantinovka and reach the AFU group in Kramatorsk.”
