China: Got its own ‘Cape Canaveral’ – Wenchang Space Center

Hainan, known as the “Hawaii of China” for its sandy beaches and temperate climate, attracts tourists for another reason besides its beauty: space.

The city of Wenchang is home to a rocket launch center and a growing tourism industry catering to the growing interest in space tourism.

China, inspired by Florida’s Cape Canaveral, has made no secret of its desire to develop this form of tourism in the region, starting with the launch of the Chang’e-6 probe spacecraft on May 3, with the aim of exploring far side of the moon.

Hilton Wenchang, with space center-like interiors, and the hotel’s gift shop with space-inspired toys enhance the space atmosphere.

The city celebrates space missions with rocket designs and screens projecting Chinese spacecraft, offering great photo spots. Bottled water in the shape of a rocket completes the experience.
