Russia’s sixth-generation Mikoyan MiG-41 fighter jet as a replacement for the Mikoyan MiG-31 is back in the news. For some Russia is pushing the boundaries of aviation engineering as it accelerates development of the MiG-41.
The plane will not only map the upper atmosphere, but also be able to fly to the edges of space. The MiG-31 “Foxhound” had a top speed of Mach 2.83.
MiG-41 development status
The MiG-41 PAK DP (Long-Range Interceptor Aviation Complex) is Russia’s evolving program to develop a stealth supersonic fighter aircraft to replace the Mikoyan MiG-31 in the Russian Aerospace Forces in the mid-2030s.
The actual name of the platform will evolve as it goes live. It will incorporate sixth generation technologies and design. The PAK DP design is said to be finalized around late 2019.
Ilya Tarasenko, General Director of MiG Corporation, as well as the head of Sukhoi Company, said in an interview in July 2020 that the PAK DP will be a major development of the MiG-31 design. Tarasenko also said that it will be a new design and build platform capable of Mach 4+, equipped with an anti-missile laser and capable of operating at very high altitudes and even in close space, flying at altitudes between the stratosphere (45 km) and the troposphere (12 km).
The aircraft is also intended to borrow ideas and technologies from the MiG-31M, with an advanced Zaslon-M radar. It could use a variant of the Izdeliye 30 engines currently under development for the Su-57.
AMNTC Soyuz has revealed some information on its website about the already developed R-579 300 engine, a possible engine for the Su-57, among others. The main challenge for the MiG-41 appears to be the continued development of the pulse detonation engine that will power the aircraft, especially managing engine wear given the highly dynamic payload it will handle. The PAK DP will use stealth technology.
Russia is developing an electromagnetic pulse EMP gun that could be a turning point in aerial warfare. This innovative “energy weapon” could expand the range of achievable targets.
Russia expects the MiG-41 with an electromagnetic cannon by 2025. A less powerful version of the EMP cannon could be an effective deterrent against unmanned aerial vehicles. The MiG-41 can also be equipped with R-37M missiles.
It could later be converted to an unmanned version. In January 2021, Rostec Corporation, the owner of Mikoyan, announced that the PAK DP had entered the development phase. The fact that the targeted first flight is in 2025 means that a lot of work has already (should) have been done. The design should have been frozen and metal cutting must have continued for a long time. Aircraft fueling and initial engine run should have been completed. If the timelines are realistic, then testing should begin in 2024.
The real state of Russian aircraft is difficult to predict due to high secrecy. If the MiG-41 successfully completes its maiden flight by 2025, it is expected to be fully operational by 2030. The originally planned entry into service in 2028 appears unrealistic. The early 2030s is a realistic scenario.
Aircraft concept and business objectives
As an aircraft, the primary mission will be to counter future reconnaissance aircraft currently being developed by the United States and China. According to some Russian media, the PAK DP was envisioned to become a hypersonic interceptor aircraft by carrying a multi-functional long-range interceptor missile system (MPKR DP) that would deliver several submissiles to increase the probability of intercepting hypersonic weapons.
The dispenser could also contain surface attack weapons. The PAK DP is also intended to carry anti-satellite lasers or missiles.
Program Planning and Management Challenges
It is believed that the Russians appear to be researching technological concepts that do not exist. The most advanced concept at the moment is the Air Force Next Generation Fighter (NGAD). China is still talking about 5th generation fighters. Both the US and China have earmarked much higher funds for their future programs.
Russia is still struggling to complete development and obtain a decent number of Su-57 ‘Felon’. The Su-75 “Checkmate” is still in its early stages. Both programs are looking for buyers to increase numbers, raise funds and amortize costs. Whether Russia is resorting to information warfare on the MiG-41 or has something up its sleeve is yet to be confirmed.
As Russia remains tied to Ukraine and faces Western economic might, it remains under pressure for funding. The Russian military-industrial base is focused on Ukraine. Will the MiG-41 get the desired support?
- At near supersonic speeds, more heat due to air friction means maintaining adequate stealth without wearing down the coating, which is also a technological challenge.
- Heat from the exhaust could also increase the radar signature.
- Stealth coating is very expensive to maintain and repair, and even the US finds it difficult.
- Designing a canopy for supersonic cum stealth flight would also be a challenge.
- Achieving high speeds normally means compromising maneuverability.
- The MiG-41’s reliance on a pulse detonation engine represents a significant technological challenge.
- While it promises massive power, it’s a notoriously complex engine.
- Even a proper ramjet deployment will not be easy.
- Such a high speed also means very high fuel burn and puts limits on range and endurance.
- To increase the range, more fuel would have to be carried, which means an increase in size and weight.
- Alternatively, aerial refueling will be required on most missions.
- The ability to fire at high Mach numbers would require specially designed weapons.
The Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” is a long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft that was retired… from the plans. It was developed in the 1960s with a reduced radar cross-section that focused mainly on reconnaissance.
Both Russia and China have modernized air capabilities to compete with America’s next-generation platforms. Russia’s pursuit of air dominance is an ambitious, bold initiative.
The MiG-41 is intended to tick all the features of a 21st century fighter wish list, including multispectral stealth, ultra-high speed, a turbo-ramjet engine, the ability to fire and shoot down hypersonic weapons and lasers, and fly at near-space altitudes to destroy satellites .
A ramjet or turbo-ramjet engine, giving more than Mach 4.3 would make it the fastest military aircraft in the world. The high performance aircraft will require advanced materials and aerodynamics.
Perhaps the most explosive item in Russia’s aerial arsenal, the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) “energy weapon” remains a mystery. The success of a reliable pulse detonation engine would give Russia real air superiority. Can Russia execute three advanced aircraft projects without buyers, as happened with the F-35?
The technologies have yet to be tested, and Ukraine has slowed things down. The program assumes a level of technological progress that does not exist. Some call the MiG 41 a “Russian fantasy”. However, Russia is a pioneer in some areas and perhaps they have something prepared in great secrecy…
