At a time when international unrest has increased dangerously and Europe is caught between two wars, the one in Ukraine and the one in Israel, the elections on Sunday, October 15, in Poland take on special significance, as it was decided whether the far-right faction (conservative national party Law and Justice (PiS) stays in power for a third term), which in cooperation with its counterpart in Hungary and Slovakia have caused insurmountable obstacles to the cohesion of the European Union, always supporting extreme options.
The Polish people proved that they cannot be deceived again by the extreme right by choosing the more liberal path by electing Donald Tusk, leader of the Civic Coalition.
The particular importance of these elections was particularly evident during the recent emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers, where the decision to stop humanitarian aid to the suffering Palestinians, who were called to pay the price due to the well-known heinous terrorist attack by Hamas, was initially frozen.
And it is not only the elections in Poland that should concern us, but also the results of Sunday, October 8, in the German states of Hesse and Bavaria, where the far-right party Alternative for Germany made a spectacular rise at the expense of the other parties , thus recalling, in all reasonable respects, the atmosphere between the two World Wars in Germany, which ultimately led to the rise of Adolf Hitler to power.
Not of course that something similar can happen in today’s age. But all this sad development proves, in the most striking way, that today there is a sad lack of capable leaders who could effectively deal with the critical situations we have been led into, such as immigration. And this finding does not concern only Germany. Because this is also happening in other countries with the prevalence of far-right elements that take advantage of popular discontent, easily projecting populist slogans.
And this is exactly what happened in Israel, with the tolerance of Europeans and Americans, after the rise of the suspect Netanyahu to power and his collaboration with the most extreme parties, in order to avoid being referred to Justice. Causing not only massive internal turmoil, but imposing a regime of de facto apartheid at the expense of the Palestinians with continuous expansions of the occupied territories and complete disregard for previous agreements to create two states with a common capital in East and West Jerusalem.
However, this does not in any way justify the brutal reaction of Hamas and its inhumane results. But the question is whether there would have been a reason to manifest this reaction, if the Palestinian issue had already been resolved. And if the Abraham Accords (under the presidency of Donald Trump) had not been signed, which provided for gradual recognitions of Israel by Arab countries, completely putting the Palestinian issue on the sidelines. While a similar agreement with Sunni Saudi Arabia was in the works, which has now collapsed. But it had already provoked the reaction of Shiite Iran, its main rival in the Middle East and a known supporter of Hamas (please also read the analysis titled “Hamas execute civilians inside Israel to destroy the Peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia“).
