On the occasion of the case of the MEP Eva Kaili and the “black” transactions with Qatar, it is proven that the corruption at the heart of the EU, which concerns the world public, is a real problem that can fundamentally shake the existence of the EU.
The amateur way of the circuit, in which the MEP and vice-president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili participated, with the money in bags, is of secondary importance, if we follow the interpretation that we are facing a wider geopolitical issue.
In this case, everything we know and what we may learn in the near future will be nothing more than a pretext used with the ultimate goal of controlling the geopolitical game in Brussels. So transparency and purification, which function as a necessity, in this case may have been a means of serving a geopolitical purpose. It is a rule that information is stored to be used when a decision is made. And the information in the international environment is collected by the known procedures.
Is lobbying legal or illegal?
Brussels followed in Washington’s footsteps. According to the usual aversion to discussing the US political system, it “likes to be influenced.” Lobbying is a legal and registered activity. At the same time, in several cases it also follows illegal routes, using financing to achieve its goals in both Washington and Brussels.
Most people will also remember General Mike Flynn’s adventures with the Turkish lobby in the US. It is recalled that the person in question was President Trump’s first choice for the position of National Security Advisor. Flynn received a significant “gift” of half a million dollars to serve Erdogan’s quest to extradite Imam Gülen to Turkey. The amount was not found in a suitcase, or hidden in a house. It was traced to his son’s company account.
In Europe, it is known that other regimes have been involved in similar activities, such as that of Erdogan’s “brother”, Azeri president Aliyev. Whispers are now also heard about the Chinese. Always under the condition that the motivation of the revelations is geopolitical, no one knows where the merry-go-round of revelations will stop. However, it is indicative that everyone is talking about how the Eva Kaili scandal is only the tip of the iceberg.
Such practices are not unprecedented in the EU. It is an open secret that financing of EU officials takes place with the aim of serving mainly corporate interests. In this particular case the pro-Qatar lobbying, admittedly crude, was turned into a weapon at the right time. The question that remains is who armed it and why. Officially, nothing will be revealed.
In the press offices, the activity of various lobbying companies in Brussels outside the legal limits was known at the rumor level. Conferences and other actions are funded with the aim of improving the public image of a country, or a large company that pays, more often to achieve a specific goal, not generally to improve the public image. Dinners organized by lobbyists with Commissioners, high-ranking Commission officials and, of course, MEPs are almost a norm.
These are not illegal, but money laundering or any kind of bribery is illegal. The Belgian authorities from somewhere received information about the illegal activity of MEPs, which they could not ignore, so they mobilized. As mentioned above, whoever provided the information was probably not interested in fighting corruption in the EU, but in using it. When decades go by with a corrupt system in place, much tends to be taken for granted. As a result, the security measures taken by those involved are relaxed.
Geopolitical control of Europe
But who threw the spark to ignite the fire? One interpretation attempted to link the development to the 15-year Germany-Qatar agreement for the annual supply of two million tonnes of liquefied natural gas. The interpretation is hampered, among others, by the participation of the American Conoco Phillips in the agreement. Energy is decisive, but always a sub-unit of geopolitical competition.
The finalization of US control of Europe seems at this stage quite convincing as a potential interpretation. Perhaps, the development is connected to the causes of the war in Ukraine, especially in the part concerning the geopolitical control of the Old Continent. Hence the suspicion of American involvement. In the absence of evidence, however, we must follow developments, looking for evidence that may complete the picture, confirming or denying the scenario in question.
Besides China and Russia, which would be obvious targets (the Russians are currently neutralized), there is interest in a possible group action by Qatar, Turkey, Azerbaijan in the capital of the United Europe. All stakeholders, at the state and individual level, will receive their messages about the new framework of the game. If indeed the big stake is the geopolitical control of Europe.
