It began on September 16 with the retirement of Monterey (CG-61). It was preceded by the withdrawal of &#8216;Vella Gulf&#8217; (CG-72) in August. On 22 September &#8220;Anzio&#8221; (CG-68) was withdrawn and a day later on 23 September &#8220;Hu\u00e9 City&#8221; (CG-66) was withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fifth Ticonderoga (of Port Royal, CG-73) is scheduled to be retired by September. For 2023 five ships are scheduled to be retired, in 2024 three ships, in 2025 three ships, in 2026 four ships and in 2027 two ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Anzio&#8221; was ordered in April 1987, construction began in August 1989, launched in November 1990 and entered service in February 1992. &#8220;Hu\u00e9 City&#8221; was also ordered in April 1987, construction began in February of 1989, launched in June 1990 and entered service in June 1991.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the course of a few days in September, the US Navy retired three Ticonderoga-class cruisers, for a total of four by 2022.
