Germany, the “steam engine” of the European economy, is worried about how it will feed its industry.

The issue of the energy security of the Old Continent will not be solved easily. It may even soon prove that the West’s energy choices were more short-sighted than we thought, as the “energy blackmail” attributed to Russia may find imitators,

To this already burdened geopolitical scene, the flare-up of the Armenia-Azerbaijan front is added, with the Azeris being accused of seizing part of the Armenian territory. Russian forces are stationed in Armenia. In the last Nagorno-Karabakh war they did not get involved on the grounds that the security guarantee concerns only Armenia. But they didn’t get involved, not even now…

The Americans rushed to fill the gap. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the American House, visited Armenia. In her statements she unequivocally condemned the use of military force, placing the blame emphatically on the Azeris, who claim that they were facing widespread provocations from the Armenians!

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan reacted very strongly in general, going so far as to attribute pre-election expediency to Pelosi’s trip. “In the run-up to the midterm elections in the US, Democrats are attempting to coddle the ears of the large and powerful Armenian community,” he argued. One cannot exclude this parameter either. But what was the pre-election purpose of Pelosi’s previous trip to Taiwan?

The US is trying to wrest Armenia from Russia

Washington seems to be in a period of rethinking its policy on all fronts. In this context, the Congress seems to be playing the role of the “hare”, at a time when the State Department’s traditionally inane announcements follow the dictates of political correctness. Is it an application of the “good cop and bad cop” strategy? Is Washington signaling that there are new dynamics influencing its policy?

This was done in Taiwan, the same in Armenia, while the lifting of the arms embargo in Cyprus can be interpreted in a similar way. Besides, in Armenia, Pelosi did not fail to mention that the US “finds it interesting” that Armenia is not satisfied with the reaction of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a reference that refers to “filling a gap ” mentioned at the beginning.

Nancy Pelosi also said that the US is “listening to Armenia” regarding its defense needs and is willing to support the country in the context of “the global struggle between democracy and authoritarianism”. It may sound like the usual easy-to-digest ideological reference aimed at domestically legitimizing the political initiative in the US, but it clearly fits into the context of the effort to detach Armenia from Russian influence.

After all, this is a long-term effort. The non-intervention of the Russians on the side of Armenia in the recent war in Nagorno-Karabakh was due, on the one hand, to the desire to punish the attempt to secede the country from the Russian cause by the pro-Western government of Pashinyan, on the other hand, to the corresponding attempt by Moscow to attract Azerbaijan closer to Russia , with the main aim of aligning the energy strategy of the two countries.

Second EU Energy Blackmail

Here we come to the real point. The major changes occurring in traditional alliances can lead to a situation where the West’s energy supply from the perceived pro-Western Azerbaijan will acquire “geopolitical asterisks”. Because Moscow also wants to maintain the image of the reliable energy supplier of the West. But when relationships become dangerously intense, the flow of energy takes on the characteristics of a weapon.

The strategic alignment of Turkey and Azerbaijan is one of the constants in the analysis of the current geopolitical scene in the wider region. Turkey seems to have set sail for other ports, more eastern, distancing itself more and more from the west, in which it “chartered” during the Cold War and for two decades after its end.

The ala bracchet walk of the presidents of Russia and Turkey at the Summit of the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO: Shanghai Cooperation Organization) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and the intention of Turkey joining it soon, not only proves the growing distance of the country from security architecture of the West, but also that Russia-Turkey’s gradual and ever-closer alignment may soon hold unpleasant surprises for the strategically naive Europe. A similar energy blackmail from Turkey and Azerbaijan. We remind you that the USA recently declared that it cannot guarantee its energy security.

The West’s Strategic Audacity in the Eastern Mediterranean

Consequently, the interest is shifting again to the Eastern Mediterranean region, where the hydrocarbon deposits are said to be many times more than what has been identified so far. The main problem remains the illusion of the Americans that they can keep Turkey in a western orbit, even with a looser than traditional bond. In Greece, however, it should have become aware that any Western desire to exploit Turkey in the policy against Russia, implies trade-offs that will likely be directed at the expense of Greek interests.

American policy towards Turkey directly undermines the search for alternative solutions in Europe’s energy supply. And if the US has the luxury of running out of patience with Turkey, Europe does not. Why, then, is it not mobilized? The timely neutralization of a potential Turkish blackmail over Azerbaijan’s hydrocarbons would be the most persuasive argument against anyone who simply thinks that it could be exercised.

The EU through Greece, Greece which should have been a hasty country in the adoption of such a policy, seems to suffer from stereotypes and ideologies that have assumed the form of wishful thinking of the European and Greek political systems respectively. That is, that it is possible in these conditions, to have a compromise with Turkey that will bring permanent results. A “compromise”, however, presupposes serious concessions to Greek rights guaranteed by international law.

Israel as a Barometer of EU Energy independence from Eurasia

Israel also enters the equation as it maintains privileged relations at all levels with Azerbaijan, mainly due to the geographical importance of this country in the Israel-Iran confrontation. Let’s not forget that Azerbaijan has also proven to be a golden market for the Israeli defense industry.

The Israelis. however, at the same time, they realize that maximizing the energy value of the Eastern Mediterranean serves their national interests, since they themselves will be suppliers of natural gas. This leads Israeli policy to a careful balancing act, especially in the part of Baku’s effort to bring Jerusalem closer to Ankara.

The same should apply to the two Greek states, member states of the EU. One would expect an aggressive diplomatic effort to rapidly exploit the deposits of the Eastern Mediterranean in order to alleviate Europe’s energy problem and of course to speed up research into the identification of new deposits. The EU – through Greece and Cyprus – must tighten its relations with the Arab states of the Gulf, which are also attempting a difficult balance in their relations with the US and Russia.

Each country seeks to maximize its national interest, bearing in mind that balances are found with compromises. Rarely does one win 100% of their pursuits, even in the US. A prioritization of pursuits and a clear understanding of which represent inviolable red lines is required.

With the war in Ukraine in full swing and winter just around the corner, the nightmare of European states is how they will face…

[836,825,3
141,2391,25,1467,146,153,143,215
post-9786","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-asia-geopolitical","category-europe-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","tag-eastern-mediterranean","tag-energy","tag-eu","tag-eurasia","tag-greece","tag-israel","tag-turkey","tag-us
["GET
