This concerns the looming crisis regarding Iran’s nuclear program, which will directly affect European security, even with non-nuclear implications.

The new conflict that is brewing, on the occasion of the Iranian Nuclear Program

More generally, the conflict in Ukraine, which shows no signs of de-escalation, has reduced the interest of the international media in the new conflict conceived on the occasion of the Iranian nuclear program. As the possibility of reviving the 2015 nuclear agreement between mainly the West and Iran, from which the US withdrew under Donald Trump Presidency in 2018, is increasing, the positions of the Israelis are increasing that this agreement not only will not be accepted, but will act unilaterally if necessary.

In Israel, the view seems to have prevailed that the revival of the agreement will only delay the development of an Iranian nuclear arsenal, while the revenues that will flow into Tehran’s state coffers from the lifting of sanctions will facilitate its development. This will not be tolerated by Jerusalem, which is almost ostentatiously increasing military training activity, with scenarios that directly refer to a strike on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

This is an international security issue that is obviously linked to the developments on the Ukrainian front as well. Although it is difficult to imagine the Israelis taking military action without a green light from Washington, the situation does not allow for complacency. In the independent Arab electronic newspaper “Elaph” (based in London since 2006, when its operation was banned in Saudi Arabia) a shock report was published regarding Israeli military activity.

The Israeli military activity

Although it has so far not been officially confirmed or denied, Israeli F-35I Adir fighter jets are said to have repeatedly penetrated Iranian airspace, undetected by the country’s air defenses consisting of Russian and Iranian-made radars. Unmanned platforms and aerial refueling aircraft took part in these mass-scale exercises.

Exercises with similar scenarios were also conducted in the Red Sea with the participation of all branches of the Israeli armed forces. Units prominent in the Iranian Navy in the region, notably a helicopter carrier and an intelligence-gathering ship with its escort, have been placed under an informal quarantine regime and their every movement is monitored by Israeli submarines and other technical methods.

American forces also took part in the exercises, but this should in no way be interpreted as a US green light to Israel. It looks more like an attempt to influence the negotiating strategy of the Iranians, imagining the successful scenario of Israeli military action.

The Israelis often carry out dense aerial refueling exercises in the Mediterranean with the Americans and beyond, as well as penetration and strike simulations, with scenarios that also “shout” Iran.

Russia-Israel relations

The war in Ukraine has complicated the geostrategic calculations of all sides. Russia-Israel relations are showing a significant deterioration. Moscow recently announced a ban on the operation of the Jewish Agency, which handles the repatriation of Jews to Israel. If this happened in any other country in the world it would have raised a wave of protests from Israel. It did not happen in this case, in a demonstration of the special nature of Moscow-Jerusalem relations.

The crisis was handled very carefully on both sides. A few days ago, a Russian district court suspended the execution of the decision, something that could not have happened had it not been the Kremlin’s wish. Vladimir Putin with this attitude entered into a mortgage to influence Israeli policy, given the presence of 165,000 Jews in the Russian Federation.

During Netanyahu’s days, with Avigdor Lieberman, born in the former Soviet Union, as foreign minister, relations between the two countries were clearly warmer. The instability in Israel’s internal politics as a result of the simple analogy, has created expectations of a total return of “Bibi” to political affairs, in collaboration with the current Minister of Defense and former Chief of the Israeli General Staff Benny Gantz. This may have contributed to the decision of the realist Russians to hit the brakes…

Russia and Israel meet on the fronts of Ukraine and Syria, but also on that of Iran. Although Moscow-Tehran cooperation is not as close as many analysts believe, Russia is using Iran to try to influence the Sunni Arab regimes of the Gulf, while not wanting Iran to hand over to China. The balance exercise is extremely delicate. Israeli foreign policy faces similar balancing needs on many fronts.

Consequently, one side understands the needs of the other to a significant degree and mutually attempts to maintain this balance. This is also the reason why, in addition to the issues concerning their national security, the diplomatic tones between Russia and Israel are not high neither for Ukraine nor for Iran.

Finally, the possible revival of the Israel-Iran hot front should signal alarm and preventive mobilization internationally and especially by European diplomacy. At a time when the great game of hydrocarbons in the Mediterranean is developing at a rapid pace, which is of capital importance for the economic future of the country and for the energy security of the entire European Continent, the attitude of Brussels in the Jerusalem-Tehran confrontation may reflect seriously affect European interests.

The nuclear alert that has signaled the possibility of the release of large amounts of radioactivity from the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear facilities has contributed…

[3,834
25,3664,160,3662,153,755,3663,215,1976
post-9552","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-geopolitical","category-middle-east-geopolitical","tag-eu","tag-international-agreement","tag-iran","tag-irans-nuclear-program","tag-israel","tag-jcpoa","tag-nuclear-agreement","tag-us","tag-war
["GET
