The aftermath of Pelosi’s visit was such that the “Economist” magazine summed up the future in the phrase “Nancy Pelosi has left Taiwan.

The real crisis may be just beginning”, as Beijing took the symbolic presence of the American high-ranking official as direct interference in the country’s internal affairs, but also as a gross violation of the “one China principle”, in which the US recognizes as an official state the People’s Republic of China and no other separatist regime.

The outpouring of Beijing’s anger was evident in its decision to impose sanctions on Pelosi, as well as to massively cut diplomatic channels of communication, suspending cooperation with Washington in a number of areas such as dialogue between senior military officers, talks on climate with the US, as well as cooperation on the prevention of cross-border crime and the repatriation of irregular migrants. Crucial, however, for the future of US-China bilateral relations is set in the fall, as it is estimated that Xi Jinping chose to test the limits of his reaction to Washington until the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.

Seeking a third term himself, a development with no recent precedent, he is believed to have paced the last few hours with a view to his re-election, which will provide him with the much-desired political legitimacy for any counterattack, possibly speeding up his stated goal of recapturing Taiwan, in the footsteps of the Russian operation in Ukraine. On the contrary, Pelosi’s visit to China deprives the Democrats of many valuable points for re-election to Congress in November, leading – with mathematical precision for some analysts – to their defeat in the midterm elections.

Although both the US president and the head of the State Department, Anthony Blinken, publicly distanced themselves from Pelosi’s “personal decision” to move to Taiwan, they did not, however, succeed in preventing her, further reducing the leadership profile of the resident White House, which emits the image of a simple spectator of the developments, to the point that several Senators of his party now avoid standing in favor of a second term for him. Added to the absence of Biden’s leadership profile is the explosive social cocktail in the US, which is mixed with the explosion of inflation, the rally in fuel prices and the derailment of the coronavirus pandemic, which is testing the president himself for the second time.

With America’s economic and social ground looking shaky, the apparent Republican lead in some states may be easier to generalize ahead of the November election, as is the populist and irrational political discourse: “Why is ‘Crazy Nancy’ Pelosi in Taiwan?” ; It always causes trouble. Nothing he does goes well (two failed impeachments, loss of majority in Congress, etc.). I’m watching!” was former President Donald Trump’s comment.

Adding to the domino of negative consequences of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan are the shake-ups in the Tripartite Security Treaty (AUKUS) between the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, with the latter now throwing bridges to Beijing after the show of Chinese power in the Taiwan Straits as well as the four ballistic missiles that accidentally ended up in Japan’s EEZ (intended, according to the Chinese, for Taiwan), prompting Tokyo’s sharp reaction. Japan and China, after all, have only a few years of tension between them over disputed islets in the East China Sea.

Taiwan, however, has in recent hours been targeted by China, which has since unleashed all forms of retaliation by opening a fan of aggressive…

[836,3
161,2838,2028,215
post-9450","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-asia-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","tag-china","tag-conflict","tag-taiwan","tag-us
["GET
