As a result, many measures taken against the Kremlin have a more unfavorable impact on the European economy than on the Russian one. Also, for years the US warned about the dangers of dependence on Russian products, especially energy, but without Europe taking these danger signals seriously.

Former US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo made some very important points. Which reveal the deepest thoughts of the USA towards Europe as well as the existential challenges it faces today. When asked about the geopolitical role of the Old Continent today (which took place at a recent conference of The Economist magazine in Athens-Greece), Michael Pompeo was revealing.

Aiming mainly at Germany, but not excluding any other EU country, the former head of the State Department struck at the heart of the problem when he pointed out that when you avoid investing in new refineries for reasons of environmental protection, when heavy fines are imposed on banks because they approve financing fossil fuel investments, when you build a new Russian pipeline (ie Nord Stream) but close your nuclear plants (and phase out lignite and criminalize coal) because you aim to survive on Renewables (!) then you are definitely geopolitically marginalised.

What else could Michael Pompeo say to demonstrate Europe’s tragic naivety and its path to political obscurity?

This shows how badly many European leaders are trying to blame the war in Ukraine for the precision and current energy impasses. The one who is directly responsible is the European leaders, Brussels and in general the “green” policies of the EU and those who obediently follow them. Since when do new refineries have to be built on European soil? So that energy products are refined (which is an economic good) at competitive prices? But is the same happening in the US, Russia, China and India? Of course not. Europe’s competitors, perhaps rivals, are moving forward, while Europe is taking steady steps backwards.

Since when have high penalties been imposed on Banks that have dared to approve financing of investments in fossil fuels and mining? But the same does not happen in countries competing with Europe such as Russia, China and India. Even the US. Which, of course, have pollution indices much higher than European ones. And all this why? For Europe to avoid the criticisms of some hysterical teenagers from Sweden (such as Greta Thunberg and her followers) and trendy environmental organizations in Germany and Europe in general that are based on questionable scientific evidence. But the anger of the popular classes for the consequences will not be directed against them. Democracy and its institutions will become the goal. Of course to the benefit of the USA but also its other authoritarian competitors.

And all this is happening in an environment of increased dependence (new pipelines) on products exported by Russia. And which thus allows it to promote policies that, if challenged, seriously endanger the European economies and the cohesion of their societies. Which geopolitical role of Europe will we be able to talk about shortly? The leaders who express it will soon be able to focus their attention on issues of social cohesion, struggling to integrate the waves of third-world migration flows that, due to the food crisis, will flood them. And which strange interests promote them, at the expense of strategic choices for the future and issues of economic development and dynamism.

Russia’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine from all sides must have caught Europe completely off guard.
