The prestigious newspaper, in its analysis, states that part of the Russian strategy was the “secret weapon” of natural gas! Great discovery for Germany with its huge financial resources and supposedly excellent organization!

Germany fell into the trap of its certainty that increasing Berlin’s energy interdependence with Moscow would avert war! They were convinced that the huge revenue for the Russians was enough to deter them. Another piecemeal, ideological, ahistorical and purely economic approach brought disaster. Although Soltz’s criticism also looks like an attempt to shift the blame from them and place it on Angela Merkel.

Germans now fear that maintenance work on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will not only last ten days, but indefinitely, leading Germany to the worst economic shock of the post-war period. The undersigned’s assessment is that it could turn out to be a Russian psychological operation, which, judging by the publication, is already producing results.

If this is the case, then the flow will be restored, with Moscow recalling its steadfast position as a reliable supplier to Europe. But if Moscow has decided to move immediately and clamp down now, it will obviously not reactivate the pipeline. Needless to say, the cost will be a nightmare in the winter months.

This attack was predictable and part of Putin’s planning, according to Handelsblatt, which claims with a report that Germany fell into Putin’s energy trap! He ends up laying the blame on “allies’ warnings” of Russian intentions being dismissed as alarmism, while low capacity levels at natural gas storage facilities were ignored. In other words, governmental criminal negligence arises.

The State Department’s special envoy for energy diplomacy, Amos Hochstein, had traveled to Germany in September 2021, warning that gas prices, already on the rise, indicated supply pressures and calling for Europe to move urgently to develop energy sources independent of Russia. Germany, however, had handed over the natural gas infrastructure to the Russians, while it thought it was privatizing them! These facilities had low occupancy, affecting supply.

The flow of the river does not turn back

Was there a plan? Did the Germans continue to promote subsidized wind turbines of their own, which they themselves abandoned as uneconomical, to a willing Greece? More generally, one wonders if the Germans are making similar mistakes with their policy towards China? Or do they wait to suffer the consequences first?

The case proves that it is the addiction to diplomatic micromanagement and the fixation on supposed compromises based on the peace and prosperity that economic interdependence brings, that has repeatedly led the Western World to fail to see the big picture of the geostrategic stakes.

Compromises and agreements, however, are shown to have hope of proving sustainable when they involve countries governed by common principles and values, the self-restraints that increase the chances of compliance with the agreed, without of course guaranteeing it.

But even if the national interest of one side dictates a retreat, the conflict is kept within a peaceful framework. Diplomatic pretexts are maintained and an attempt is made to absorb the shocks by actively seeking a new compromise that will more effectively address the problem.

But when the West itself denounces Russia for absolute cynicism, intemperance and aggressiveness, shouldn’t it realize that in the case of Turkey, the same things that the Germans find fearful after the fact must be taken into account in advance?

Will Germany make the same mistakes as Turkey?

While they find that despite their huge energy dependence on Russia, which they allowed, they are now forced to look for alternatives. Will they repeat an identical mistake with Turkey, which demands to become an energy hub for promoting hydrocarbons in Europe?

Will they continue to pretend that Erdogan’s country shares similar principles and values, which the West constantly preaches to justify a complete severance of relations with Moscow? With Turkey’s international behavior on record, do they consider it inconceivable that the fullness of time will come and face similar energy blackmail, this time from Turkey?

And as far as the wider part of security is concerned, when they accuse Russia of expansionary war, artificially bypassing their colossal failure to realize that it absolutely meant what it declared as red lines, they do not see the frightening similarities with Turkey’s declared policy of threats and expansion towards Greece ; Is Ankara not hiding anything, but expressing it openly, even to an ally country? By what logic is it still considered that there is scope for a mutually beneficial solution in Greek-Turkish?

Could it be that their strategic myopia has led the Germans to treat Greece almost like Ukraine? Because the failure, or reluctance, to properly predict Russian actions and to seek a sustainable symbiotic solution with Russia in time, is paid for by Ukraine. It has already lost around 30% of its territories in the two rounds of conflicts (Crimea 2014 and Donbass 2022).

The West may denounce the Russians, but the Ukrainians will suffer the unspeakable damage. At the same time, the West’s panic is not about Ukraine’s territorial losses, but the dramatic energy situation that Western societies will face, with the absolute responsibility of their leaders! Can we reasonably assume that they treat Greece in the same way, even unconsciously?

But things are even worse! If it is assumed that the principles and values are for the naive, the German government is trying to solve the energy impasse, by reactivating “dirty” methods of electricity generation, but in combination with the replacement of cheap Russian gas by the very expensive American shale! A solution, which they smugly denounced, considering that it was the pursuit of the American Amos Hockstein when he warned them from September 2021.

And it’s good that there is no alternative. But how is it explained that they do not realize the direct interest of the EU to invest in the fastest possible exploitation of the Mediterranean deposits in a European EEZ? How do they not realize that at this juncture, always in compliance with international law, there is no room for tolerance of Turkey’s predatory tendencies?

Not burning the Americans makes sense since they are serving their own selfish commercial interest. The Germans, however, why don’t they do the same for their own interest, which is identical to the European one? But mainly the Greek government itself, why is it not moving in the same direction?

The State Department’s policy towards Greece is full of wishful thinking about providing support in the field of energy transition, de-lignification and the green economy. This, as explained, is an American interest.

All of Europe seems to have agreed to pay an astronomical energy price to the US in exchange for the military cover it supposedly provides. If Greece has accepted and is part of such an arrangement, its political leadership is obliged to inform the Greek society and convincingly justify its choice.

Regarding the geostrategically immature Europe, but also the experienced Americans, another observation must be made: Greece has been warning its partners for years, without being heard, that the problem with Turkey is both real and European. Somehow the partners failed miserably with their policy to prevent the real threat they faced from Russia.

Will they repeat the same mistake with Turkey, or will they finally be able to interpret the lessons of the current crisis, so that by acting coordinated, rationally and proactively, they can finally defend European interests?

The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, speaking to the American network CBS, estimated that the Russian attack on Ukraine had been planned for a long…

[825,3
3594,489,146,124,58,143,1156,184
post-9107","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-europe-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","tag-energy-security","tag-germany","tag-greece","tag-nato","tag-russia","tag-turkey","tag-ukraine","tag-west
["GET
