The issue of denunciation of the Treaty was raised by the representative of the CPRF faction Mikhail Matveyev.

According to the Russian politician, the concessions of so many thousands of square km were explained by the fact that the agreement should have a positive effect on the “interaction between the Arctic countries”. “Today we see how the Kingdom of Norway prevents food from being sent to Svalbard, to our settlements,” he said.

“The dividing line agreement does not contain any termination clause. It is common practice for this type of boundary setting agreement to be valid indefinitely. We assume Russia will deal with it. Norway and Russia have a mutual interest in maintaining the demarcation line agreement,” said Norwegian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Ane Haavardsdatter Lunde.

Norway has banned the transit of goods through its territory needed to supply the Russian village of Barentsburg, located in western Svalbard, in a repeat of Lithuania’s move with Kaliningrad. They state that the ores mined from Svalbard “Power the Russian war machine to continue the war in Ukraine” and have cut off food, fuel and machinery from the villages.

Two Russian Northern Fleet warships have approached the islands and two strategic submarines are patrolling within a 100-mile radius of them, while the Norwegians are boosting their military presence and have also sent two frigates there.

Also continuous are P-8 electronic surveillance aircraft patrols from northern Norwegian bases. The reason for the termination of the agreement therefore concerns the Russian population of the island of Svalbard, which is small, about 500 people, and is mainly employed in coal mining by the company FGUP GT Arktikugol. Also, in the archipelago there are two more Russian settlements, “Pyramid” and “Gramad”.

Completely dependent on supplies from the mainland, Oslo’s decision calls into question their very existence and the continued Russian presence in Svalbard.

But how did these settlements end up and function in Norwegian territory? The Svalbard archipelago is located in the Arctic Ocean, rich in natural resources and of great military importance. However, at the same time, it has the status of a demilitarized zone, and the only country that actually carries out economic activity on Norwegian soil, apart from Norway itself, is the Russian Federation.

The Speaker of the State Duma (Russia), Vyacheslav Volodin, instructed the International Relations Committee of the House of Representatives to denounce or suspend the…

[836,825,3
954,3589,2208,58
post-9078","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-asia-geopolitical","category-europe-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","tag-arctic","tag-barents-sea","tag-norway","tag-russia
["GET
