No one should give in to the simplistic and dangerous one-way thought that the escalation of Ukraine&#8217;s military equipment solves the problem. Acting prudently, the leaders of France, Germany and Italy keep open channels of diplomacy with Russia. They are attacked by their ruthless counterparts: some violators of the rule of law in their country, while others, trapped in the impasse of the past, but all determined to fight bravely until the last Ukrainian soldier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The raw data on the battlefield do not allow exaggerated expectations of victory against Russia. A nightmarish day on the horizon of a &#8220;frozen&#8221; and perpetual conflict in Ukraine is looming on the horizon, unless the solution is a lasting peace, based on mutual compromises. The questions are very hard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>As desirable as it is, how realistic is a military defeat of Vladimir Putin&#8217;s regime?<\/li><li>If this military defeat were still to take place, would it ensure Ukraine&#8217;s ability to rebuild with the expectation of peace and economic survival?<\/li><li>Or would it be the prelude to an even more barbaric Russian rematch?<\/li><li>And what would this mean for peace and security in the EU?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The war started by uniting Europe, now it divides it and if it lasts in the long run, it is in danger of disintegrating it. Its continuation escalates the economic crisis, sparks social tensions, favors anti-European forces. The war in Ukraine pushed for Europe&#8217;s energy security and defense maturity. But its extension threatens all its priorities, on the implementation of which the public&#8217;s confidence in the EU and in democracy depends: economic stability, security, basic prosperity and social protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine will need huge amounts of long-term development aid to rebuild. Responsible European leaders operate with realistic awareness. This is what Emmanuel Macron, Mario Draghi and Olaf Sholz are doing, striving to keep the channels of reconciliation open, to shape for Europe, together with Ukraine, the framework for tomorrow&#8217;s peace, for an Ukraine that will not be a black hole in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintaining the flow of military aid, so that Zelensky has a better bargaining chip.
