“Toxic” work culture is the most important reason why people quit and is 10 times more important than pay, according to research published in the MIT Sloan Management Review (By Donald Sull, Charles Sull, and Ben Zweig-https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/toxic-culture-is-driving-the-great-resignation\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what exactly does a toxic workplace look like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers analyzed 1.4 million reviews on the Glassdoor website – where anonymous former and current corporate employees “rate” or criticize workplace conditions – from nearly 600 large US companies and found that workers described toxic workplaces. in five basic ways: non-inclusive, disrespectful to the employee, immoral, with relentless competition and offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a toxic work environment is like?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on anonymous reviews, employees state that the following five descriptions are part of a toxic work culture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The culture of exclusion prevails<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees depending on their gender, race, sexual identity and orientation, the disability they may face and their age, feel that they are not being treated fairly, are not welcomed or are not included in key decisions. Researchers warn that while these identity issues may not apply to all employees, they have a major impact. For example, “respect” refers 30 times more often to employee criticism than equality to the LGBTQ community, but both issues have the same impact on a culture official’s view when discussed negatively in a review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.<\/strong> Lack of respect, or lack of attention, kindness and dignity for others<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous research by researchers has found that respect or lack thereof was the single strongest predictor of how employees as a whole rated corporate culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.<\/strong> Unethical conduct<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Including descriptions that the employer is dishonest or lacks regulatory compliance, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, which protect the safety of employees, and the law that protects sensitive patient information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.<\/strong> “Backstabbing” and relentless competition.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 10% of employee ratings were poorly done in their company, which did not have a huge impact on turnover. But what corresponded to low culture ratings and higher staff turnover rates was for employees to say that their office was “Darwinian” or that their co-workers often “stab each other in the back”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.<\/strong> Abusive administration, <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

which includes intimidation, harassment and hostility. Nearly a third of Glassdoor’s critics refer to management in general, while 0.8% described their manager as abusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Problem of Toxic Workplace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people quit because of a toxic work culture, the costs are both human and business. Workers who work in toxic environments have higher levels of stress, burnout, mental health problems and other stressors that can lead to poor physical health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Society of Human Resources Management estimates that 1 in 5 employees have quit their jobs at some point in their careers because of a toxic culture that cost businesses more than $44 billion a year before the Big Resignation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
